Take-Aways from the Literacy Coaching Team:

  • You are reading to learn about writing.
  • Most text have qualities to be emulated. Use your favorites to showcase the author's craft.
  • Mentor text can mean a section of a text, teacher writing or student examples.

Units of Study: FAQ

After “piloting” and now fully implementing Lucy Calkins, I am struggling with understanding how Lucy Calkins aligns with our district’s goals for personalized learning?

HSSD's goal goal for the 2015-16 school year is the implementation of stage one of personalized learning. This is defined as teacher-centered with learner voice and choice.

The Units of Study allow for this personalization through learner choice of topic, materials, audience, learning zones, and publication options (i.e. projects, PBL, content integration, multimedia). Learner voice is acknowledged through student goal setting, conferring and partnerships.

This first year of implementation of the new materials will be a year of learning. As we become more familiar with the Units of Study, opportunities for authentic integration will become apparent.

2015-16 Units of Study Expectations

Rubrics: All grade levels will use Lucy Calkins' rubrics to score all areas (e.g., conventions, structure, genre).

Grading: Each unit will be taught and assessed at least one time this year. Use post on-demand assessment data and consider other important aspects of student writing to inform grading decisions (e.g., notebook entries, drafts and publications).

Report Cards: Writing standards can be aligned to follow Units of Study program.

*This is year 1 of a 3 year implementation.
