Social Work Corner

This week, our students had some wonderful SEL lessons! 6th & 7th grades describe challenges they might face as they start middle school and identify resources where they can get help.

8th grade describe how the Second Step program can help them navigate physical, social, and emotional changes in adolescence.

Next week, students will be participating in a lesson which is set to teach students the appropriate behavioral expectations for the skill of “Accepting Criticism or a Consequence.”

The objectives of the lesson for students include:

  • learning the steps of the skill of “Accepting Criticism or a Consequence.”

  • practicing the skill.

  • generalizing the use of the skill to different situations and people.

Please take time to talk with your child about their school day and ask what they learned about

Every week we will be highlighting a social emotional lesson that we are teaching our students. Click here for an overview of the Second Step program.

Timely Info

  • Website: If you ever have questions about when clubs are meeting or events that are going on at Jerling please refer to our website! This is updated every day with what's happening in the building!
  • Culture Boards: Last school year we enjoyed learning about the cultures, traditions, and celebrations of our students and families! This year we will continue learning about our students and families through the Culture Boards with these monthly themes. The school Culture Boards are meant to help us learn more about the diversity that makes Orland 135 unique and to strengthen the community and relationships within our schools.

We are encouraging families to send in pictures and/or drawings to match the themes each month. Families can send in one submission during any or all months. Submissions need to be 8.5 in x 11 in, which is a standard piece of paper, or smaller. Artifacts will not be accepted as well as any submissions larger than a piece of paper. Attached to this email is a prompt for submissions. Please fill out the student’s name, grade, and add a 1-2 sentence description. The displays will be rotated each month with different pictures and drawings of what families are proud to share.

Pictures are due at the end of the month and are hung up for the following month. All pictures will be returned at the end of the month.

The first theme is due at the end of September and will be displayed for October.

September - Summer Fun! Share pictures, drawings, and/or a written description of something you did over the summer. (Trips, books you read, outdoor activities, camps, etc)

October - Food: Share pictures, drawings, and/or a written description of food your family enjoys or food that is part of your culture.

  • Drop off times: 0 hour supervision begins at 7:15 and 1st hour supervision begins at 8:10. Please make sure students are arriving to Jerling when we have our supervisors on duty.

ATTENTION all Choir, Band and Orchestra Students and families!!!
Music Parents East is starting off the year with a popsicle party!! Come and enjoy a popsicle in the Jerling commons Tuesday September 20th from 4:00-4:45pm. We will be accepting membership at that time as well. We highly encourage all families to be members of the association. Being a member doesn’t require any commitment— you can be involved as much or as little as you wish, but it does allow us to give the music program things they are in need of or provide fun opportunities for the students.
Looking forward to seeing familiar faces, meeting new ones and starting off the year on a great note!

*Each music student will receive a free popsicle and siblings/families can enjoy for $1.00 each.

Be the Reason....

This year's district theme is "Be the Reason." This theme is intended to inspire others to be someone else's reason... You can be a reason someone feels, valued, heard, supported, cared for, accepted and loved! This year we want to shout out all of our students for "Being the Reason" we all have had a great start to the year. We know they are our reason we love our jobs so much. Thank you for raising such wonderful children!

This week Grace wanted to share her reason...
