Edgewood's Tiger Talk
December 2015
From the Desk of Mrs. Boyd
At Edgewood, we're blessed with a wonderful group of students. We have positive systems in place to teach and promote positive behavior.
Even with the best proactive plans, though, there is, at times, a need for discipline. Here, I'll share a bit with you about my philosophy. First, I believe that all discipline should lead to learning. Our goal is to prevent the same thing from occurring again, and to develop the skills that we need in our citizens.
Second, consequences should be logical. If you broke it, you should fix it. For example, if a student colors all over a desk, I'll ask them to clean that (or something similar). Another logical consequence is a loss of privilege. It's a privilege to get to be in class with the group, or to choose the game you want to play at recess. If a child is repeatedly disruptive in class, they might temporarily lose the privilege of working with the group.
Third, discipline should be respectful. Students are valued, worthy people. I may like them, but I may not have liked a choice he or she made. I work to convey this in each and every one of my interactions.
I also believe that parental partnership is key as we work to help our children to learn from their mistakes and make better choices in the future. If you ever have questions or concerns about consequences, please contact me.
