ELA Lesson 3
GOAL: Identify main idea and supporting details in a text.
First...LAUNCH:
- Activate your knowledge by reading the passage to the left. Click on the picture to make it bigger.
- Then use the link below to the Padlet. Write down what you think would be a great title for the Title it passage based on your knowledge of main idea. This will be a collaborative document with all of your classmates' ideas so be creative!
- Watch the video below for a fun and quick review of main idea:
Next...Explore:
- Add anything new that you learned or any questions you have to your KWL from your first lesson.
- Continue working on your Main Idea Tic-Tac-Toe Choice Board. You should already have this document. Choose your THIRD activity to complete. (Remember that you are trying to get tic-tac-toe-three-in-a-row)
- Watch the video below to listen to directions on how to complete each activity. Feel free to skip ahead to the activity you are completing (times are on the picture to the left)
Last...LANDING:
- Submit your THIRD and final choice board activity to your teacher using their preferred method.
- Submit your KWL chart to your teacher using their preferred method.
MATH LESSON 1
GOAL: Multi-Digit Dividing with Whole Numbers
Unit 5 Key Math Vocabulary
First...LAUNCH:
- GET YOUR BRAIN READY TO THINK LIKE A MATHEMATICIAN! We will ACTIVATE our brains with "TWO TRUTHS & A LIE"!
- Look at the picture above entitled: "Two Truths and A Lie" to determine which statements are TRUE and which one is the LIE! Hmmm... I need to think- What does it mean if we say a number is EVEN? What is a PRIME number? and... what are FACTORS? Did you figure it out? Once you have determined which statement is the LIE, ask yourself... "Could I explain and justify (show) my reasoning?" Write your answer down and keep it in a safe place just for you- you DO NOT need to submit it to your teacher. The answer will be found somewhere throughout the lesson, so be sure to READ ALL DIRECTIONS in each section to FIND IT! Good Luck Mathematicians!
- Watch the Video that models multi-digit division.
- It would be helpful to have a piece of paper or whiteboard with you to solve the problems along with the video, and to jot down "key ideas".
- Pay close attention to how mathematicians ESTIMATE when dividing with double-digit divisors!
Next...EXPLORE:
- Complete the Student Task
- THINK! What is my estimate? Then solve and check your work to see if your answer makes sense and is reasonable. Don't Forget... You can check to see if your answer is correct with multiplication! (Division and Multiplication are inverse operations: they "undo" one another)
- **REMEMBER that you will complete and submit the task following the instructions provided by your classroom teacher.
Last...LANDING:
- Once you have finished the Student Task you will reflect on the lesson to complete the 3,2,1 Exit Ticket.
- **REMEMBER that you will complete and submit the Exit Ticket following the instructions provided by your classroom teacher.
- YOU FOUND IT! The answer to our "Two Truths & A Lie Math Activator" is... 24 has EXACTLY two factors as the LIE because 24 has 8 FACTORS (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, & 24)
Math Lesson 2
GOAL: Mathematicians will divide decimal numbers.
First...LAUNCH:
**Look at our MYSTERY NUMBER Activator today located above! Read each clue carefully and record your answer on a piece of paper . Keep your paper safe just for you, you DO NOT need to submit this to your teacher. Continue with the lesson and be sure to read all directions carefully & look for the answer! Good Luck Mathematician!
Watch the Modeling Lesson Video below for Dividing Decimals
- THINK... "How is this the same as division with whole numbers?" and "Why does shifting the decimal in both the divisor and the dividend work?"
- You may wish to have a piece of paper or a whiteboard with you as you watch the video to work along with the problems being modeled or to jot "key ideas" you think you'll need as a mathematician to divide decimals.
Next...EXPLORE:
- Complete both Student Tasks ONE and TW0
- Don't Forget... You can check to see if your answer is correct with multiplication! (Division and Multiplication are inverse operations: they "undo" one another)
- **REMEMBER that you will complete and submit the tasks following the instructions provided by your classroom teacher.
- YOU FOUND IT! The Mystery Number is... 0.875! Was this what you were thinking?
STUDENT TASK ONE
STUDENT TASK TWO
DIVIDING DECIMALS HELPFUL STEPS
Last...LANDING:
- Once you have finished Student Tasks ONE & TWO you will reflect on the lesson to complete the 3,2,1 Exit Ticket.
- **REMEMBER that you will complete and submit the Exit Ticket following the instructions provided by your classroom teacher.
Math Lesson 3
GOAL: Mathematicians will make sense of the problem and interpret the Remainders when solving.
First...LAUNCH:
- MATH ACTIVATOR: Look at the picture above- THINK...How many eggs are there in the glass container? What would be an Overestimate? What would be an Underestimate? What strategy will I use to reason through my estimated guess? What is my estimation? Write down your estimation and keep it safe just for you, you DO NOT need to submit this to your classroom teacher. Be sure to look for the actual answer found somewhere in the Smore! GOOD LUCK Mathematicians!
- Refer to the Anchor Chart below for the different ways you can interpret the Remainder.
- Watch the Video Lesson that models how to interpret the Remainder
- Jot some notes as you watch the video. (Pay attention to the "Tips" shared throughout the video that will help you as a mathematician.)
Next...EXPLORE:
- After you have finished watching the video and reviewing the Anchor Chart, you will apply your knowledge in completing the Student Activity seen here.
- Read each mathematical word problem and ask yourself the questions listed as you show your work to solve.
- Then choose the letter from the top (A-E) that represents how you would interpret the Remainder and place that letter on the line provided for each problem.
- Once you have completed problems #1-4 look to see what letter choice you did not use and create your own Word Problem that uses this interpretation of a Remainder.
**REMEMBER that you will complete and submit the task following the instructions provided by your classroom teacher.
Last...LANDING:
- Once you have finished the Student Task you will reflect on the lesson to complete the 3,2,1 Exit Ticket.
- **REMEMBER that you will complete and submit the Exit Ticket following the instructions provided by your classroom teacher.
YOU FOUND THE ANSWER! There are 93 eggs in the glass container!
Social Studies LESSON 1
GOAL: Explore the Jamestown Settlement
First...LAUNCH:
- Watch the video below to learn about the Jamestown Settlement.
- While viewing the video be active listeners by considering the following questions:
- What was life like aboard the ships headed towards North America?
- What challenges did the settlers face in Jamestown?
- How would you describe the settlers relationship with Native Americans?
Next...EXPLORE:
- Complete the Jamestown Settlement Reflection activity found in your teachers' preferred platform.
- Remember to use the Jamestown video as a reference!
Last...LANDING:
- Submit your Jamestown Settlement Reflection activity to your teacher using their preferred platform.
