The Puma Paw
A Pinebrook community information source
November 18 2022
Hello Puma Families,
The Turkey of The Year hours have been read and votes counted ...the 2022 Teacher, Turkey Of The Year, is ... announced on Tuesday! In true cliffhanger fashion, we wanted to make it an exciting reveal the day before Thanksgiving Break. But, it'll be a massive announcement as the Turkey will welcome bus riders, walkers, and car riders and visit each classroom to say hello. Fortunately for the staff member, they get to be in a turkey costume all day. And, not that we want the turkey to leave, but this is a resume builder for sure.
But the real winner is the students and our community. Thank you, caregivers, who reminded your children to read, thanks to the staff that organized (Mrs. Higgins and her crew) and participated, and of course, to the students that did the reading!

Pumas That Pounce
This story is one of my favorites of the year so far. Will S., a student in Ms. Harris' grade 4 class, heard his teacher talk about the new student joining their class. The part that caught Will's attention was when Ms. Harris mentioned that the new student didn't speak English. Instead, Will learned that the student spoke Arabic. The problem was, Will didn't either. Not to be deterred, Will went to work. His goal was to make her feel comfortable and welcomed. To do so, he researched phrases in Arabic and created flashcards so that he could communicate with her and help her around the classroom. He and his family looked up English phrases and discovered how to write them in the new student's native language. Ms. Harris wasn't surprised at Will's kindness as she said he is always willing to help those around him and wants everyone to feel welcome. Congratulations, Will. Keep up the kind spirit and thoughtfulness!
First Grade Celebrates the 50th Day of School!
Poodle skirts, T-bird jackets, and rolled-up sleeves with cool shades came rolling into school last week as the First-Graders, the 50th day of school in style ... 1950s style, that is! Students completed several activities around the number 50 to connect the theme and content tightly together. Great work, first grade! It will be one of many times we see something like this; wait until we get to day 100!
First Grade Brought Some Light on The Subject of Reading!
Keep building, kiddos! Reading stamina is critical to developing comprehension, and what better way to shed some light on stamina building than with a flashlight?! First-grade students brought their flashlights to school on Friday to have "Flashlight Friday." During independent reading time, the students open books and flick on the flashlight as they read. Students track their reading time and set goals for increasing it.
5th Grade Thanksgiving Food Drive!
Kudos to all fifth-grade students and families who donated 492 pounds of food to the Dulles South Food Pantry. There was a friendly competition, and Ms. Josselyn's class brought in the most food, but the community and 5th-grade students won. It was a fantastic example of generosity, and the Food Pantry staff was deeply appreciative. This event was one of several acts of service our 5th-grade students will participate in this year.

Remember, when you come to school...
- When you come to school, it's essential to be in the habit of three things:
- Make an appointment
- Have your ID;
- Have your phone, especially if you are tardy, picking up, or returning a child to school, as we use an electronic form to record the child's return. You will access the form via a QR code scanned by your phone.
