February 2023
Letter to our Community
February is a month that signifies many changes. Although the groundhog saw his shadow, and we'll have 6 more weeks of winter, the days are getting longer, and we all look forward to more sun. This winter season has brought us some extreme weather with snow and ice. Thank you for your teamwork during dismissal. Here are just a few reminders about the icy roads:
- Please remember the posted speed limit is 5MPH
- Please use the designated crosswalks; it is slippery outside
- Children must enter the vehicle on the side closest to the sidewalk; the other side is actively moving traffic.
- Be mindful of buses entering the bus loop, do not block these entrances/exits. Busses pulling out need some clearance, do not park beyond the X while waiting in line for pick up
Pick-up can be frustrating. We don't want to add a vehicle or pedestrian accident to the mix. Thank you for demonstrating patience and being a good role model for children.
It's also time to tell ASD how you feel about Spring Hill. We take great pride in building relationships with our community and students. You can take the Family School Climate Survey by clicking the link below.
Sincerely,
Lena Brower

It’s time for Idita-read! Idita-read will begin on Wednesday, February 6 and end on Wednesday, March 6. Each student will have the opportunity to read for an individual goal. Here are the rules and requirements for Idita-read:
✓ Preschool, Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade students will be asked to read 20 minutes to move from one checkpoint to another on the Iditarod trail. This includes minutes read with or by parents.
✓Third Grade through Sixth Grade students will be asked to read for 30 minutes to move from one checkpoint to another on the Iditarod trail.
✓The Iditarod Trail will be displayed in each hallway and every student will have a musher, sled, and a dog to move from checkpoint to checkpoint. All students will start on the Anchorage checkpoint and will travel the Southern Route. There are a total of 26 checkpoints to reach Nome.
✓Each student will be given a verification log to take home. These must be signed by a parent verifying time read and returned to the classroom teacher in order for students to move to the next checkpoint. When students reach the halfway checkpoint they will earn an Alaska flag pin. When students reach Nome they will have a choice of two prizes.
Students reaching Nome by March 6 will take part in the Idita-read Celebration!
The goal of Idita-read is to encourage all students to read. All goals are easier to reach and more fun when everyone participates. So, let’s get busy and READ, READ, READ!!

Excused & Unexcused Absences
Excused Absences
The Superintendent or designee may excuse student absences for health reasons, family emergencies, participation in religious activities, or other reasons the Superintendent or designee determines constitute a good cause.
Unexcused Absences/Truancy
The School Board is committed to keeping students in school. Truancy is defined as the absence of a student from class without the knowledge or prior consent of the parent/guardian. The Superintendent or designee shall implement all steps appropriate to reduce student absences and to ensure that all children residing within the district are receiving appropriate educational services as required by law.
Make up Procedures
Attendance Notifications
An automated “robocall” attendance phone message goes out to all students in an unexcused absence. Standard practice is for middle and high school calls to go out at the end of the business day. Elementary households will also receive calls, beginning at 11 a.m.
The recorded attendance notification message is the district’s official parents' notification of an unexcused absence. The attendance notification messages are translated into five of the district’s most common languages besides English.
