Sigler Elementary Monday Memo

Week of January 19th

Our theme at Sigler Elementary this year is "connecting". Each week we will capture images of our Sigler Community connecting in four vital areas; curriculum, community, students and staff. We will showcase the images below for all to enjoy and remind ourselves of the power of a connectivity!

Staff Spotlight - Mrs. Luz Valentin - 2nd Grade

Each week, staff members at Sigler Elementary have opportunity to be in the "spotlight" and share a little bit about themselves with our readers.

Get to Know Mrs. Luz Valentin - 2nd Grade

I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I moved to Houston, Texas during the summer of 1988 as a federal employee, working in the Investigation Department for the FDIC. In 1992 they transferred my husband, Modesto Valentin, to Dallas, Texas and after six months we were all moved in. Even though I enjoyed that type of work, I didn’t feel complete. As I grew up on the small island of Puerto Rico I was always playing with my dolls pretending they were the students and of course, I was the teacher. Soon after the move, I started volunteering at my two son’s schools. As my involvement became more significant and my employer at that time was trying to move us again to a different state, the principal from one of my son’s schools encouraged me to get involved as a teaching assistant. Next, came a Parent Liaison position at Sigler Elementary. While doing my job as a Parent Liaison, I was inspired by some of the most passionate teachers I know, and decided to go back to college and get certified as a Bilingual Teacher.

Now, I better understand that my pretend classroom reflected my own teacher’s world, and what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I am a proud mom of two wonderful sons; Julio Rivera better known as DJ Souljah and my very special Choir Director for Carpenter Middle School, Guillermo Valentin. I also have a stepson named Alejandro Valentin and a handsome grandson named, Landon Valentin.

AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination

Each week we are going to highlight an AVID strategy that you can incorporate into your routine in the classroom or parents can discuss with students at home.

WICOR and Technology

Craig Mckinney, AVID teacher at Renner Middle School tweeted this last week and is seeking input. It is an amazing resource that all of us can use to reflect on how we can integrate technology into our lessons that will promote writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR). Check it out and be sure to add what resources you are using in your classrooms.
