OMS Takes Steps to Success!

This week we hosted a Bulldog PRIDE assembly for each grade to recognize students for achieving a 3.0 or higher GPA during the 2nd trimester. For their achievement, students received a tardy pass as well as a technology pass. Both of which are hot items! :) Students were encouraged to set a goal for the 3rd trimester, stay focused and to finish strong. We will pull grades on May 27th, all students who have a 3.0 or higher will receive a tardy pass, a technology pass, a homework pass and be invited to a movie on June 9th. Please talk with your student about their goal. Our 6th grade students led the 4.0 charge, with 28 of them reaching this goal. We couldn't be prouder of our students!

The assembly concluded with some test taking tips from high students and encouragement to do their best on the upcoming M-STEP assessment. The high school students provided fun games for our students to help make their point of what is needed to do well on a test. Our Superintendent, Mr. Haase, sent a fun video message to our students likening the test to training for baseball and assured them he knew they were going to hit a homerun!

M-STEP Window Opens After Spring Break

Students in grades 3-8 and 11 will be assessed on Michigan's current content standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science & Social Studies. This year, the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress) will be given April 11th through May 27th in an on-line format with the 8th graders going first. Grades 6-8 will be tested in ELA (Reading, Writing, & Listening Comprehension) and Math. Grade 7 will be tested in Science & Grade 8 will be tested in Social Studies. It is very important for students to be in attendance on these scheduled testing dates. Thank you in advance for ensuring that your student is here, well rested and has had a good breakfast. I am excited for them to show all that they know. They have been well prepared, and I am confident they will hit a homerun!

Stay tuned for more information about the 6th & 7th grade chaperones after spring break. Below is the link for our criminal background check. All volunteers must have this form completed every two year. http://www.otsegops.org/sites/default/files/CRC%20History%20Affidavit%20for%20Volunteers%20-%201%2029%2013.pdf

Just when you thought it was safe to read your OMS Newsletter again, it’s back!

Since our first attempt to tour the Allegan County Area Technical and Education Center (ACATEC) was thwarted by Mother Nature, we have been in intense negotiations to figure out another date. Finally, we can announce that the ACATEC trip will occur Tuesday, May 3. Barring another snow event, flood, hurricane, or plague(!), we are sending two groups that day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Also as before, we need parents willing to chaperone to help make this trip happen. If you would like to join us and experience first-hand the over two dozen different career development programs and opportunities at ACATEC for your child, we strongly consider chaperoning with us! No group will be larger than 15 students, and all groups are assigned an ACATEC docent guide that leads each tour. The morning group will gather at about 8:15 and be back at school by 10:45. The afternoon group will gather about 12:15 and be back by 2:30. Join us for this educational experience that is great information for both students AND parents! Contact our school counselor, Keith Fuller, at 692-6199 or kfuller@otsegops.org.

FYI: Because the choir and band students have performances a few days right after May 3, they have been assigned a tour already. Band students will tour in the afternoon, and choir students will tour in the morning in order to avoid their rehearsals: please keep this in mind if you should want to chaperone a group and would like your musically inclined child to tour with you(!). Thank you!

Otsego Swim Club Gearing up for the Summer Season!
