ALICE - Enhanced Lockdown Drill

This week at Silver Springs we will have an ‘Enhanced Lockdown’ or safety drill, following ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) protocol, a set of proactive strategies that move beyond traditional lockdown and increase the chance for survival during a violent intruder event. That means teachers will barricade doors in their classrooms by closing locked doors, using a rope to secure the door, and moving furniture to block entry into student/staff occupied areas.

Like fire and tornado drills, training for such an event, even though highly unlikely, dramatically improves the odds that those faced with the situation will be less likely to freeze, and more likely to respond in ways that help keep themselves and others safe.

ALICE training empowers adults and students with strategies to keep themselves and each other safe – through access to more information, a greater emphasis on evacuating when possible, enhancing lockdown protocols, and providing age-appropriate lessons and information.

There will be further drills in the next few months, and our families will be notified each time. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have further questions. Providing a safe place for students and staff to learn and grow is one of the most important responsibilities of any school system.

Please see the attached letter for more information.

Schoolwide T-Shirts

Silver Springs Families~

Last year we ordered school-wide t-shirts to be worn at all school assemblies, class field trips, Leadership Day (TBD) and on NEST days (neighbors–varying aged students, enthusiastically synergizing together).

Our plan is to have students wear these t-shirts for two years, therefore the 2018-2019 school year being the second year. If you were not here last year when we ordered these t-shirts, or would like to order another shirt for this school year, please fill out the form below. ORDERS AND PAYMENT OF ONLY $5 ARE DUE ON SEPTEMBER 28TH.

If you have any questions or if ordering this t-shirt presents a financial hardship for your family, please contact Tanya Murphy at murphyta@northvilleschools.org in the front office for assistance.

Let’s keep swimming…we have 106 families and 18 staff members who have joined the PTA so far!

Thank you to everyone who has joined our PTA. The SS Springs PTA benefits all our students, teachers, and school. There is no obligation to join…just show your support by joining. Your membership covers basically the dues so we still need everyone to donate to Invest In

Your Child also. Look for your fish in the Silver Springs display case. It gets updated each week as memberships come in. Your child will receive an ocean themed pencil. Check for the next round of pencils in Monday envelopes.

Help your child’s class empty their bucket of pencils in the display case when you join the SS PTA. The TOP classes will be rewarded.

Upper El – Kiebler in 1st place – Labadie and Georgoff tied for 2nd

Thank you for swimming into the school year with us…the SS PTA!

Get Caught In This Important Wave at Silver Springs… Invest In Your Child

Thank you for all the generous donations from our Silver Springs families. Thanks to your donations we are around $7, 700. Please help us reach our goal of at least $10, 000.

Just to give you an idea of how much money is needed to cover our costs:

$50 from 4 families = 1 classroom teacher $200 for classroom supplies

$50 from 40 families = Time For Kids subscription for the year (approximately)

$50 from 7 families = Reflections (National PTA Art Contest) at Silver Springs

$50 from 40 families = Science Alive for the grade levels this year

This is just a FEW of the things the PTA covers…

We truly need all our Silver Springs families to give what they can to help ensure the SS PTA can support and fund all we do for our students, teacher, and school. Your donation is tax deductible. All the money donated stays at Silver Springs. You don’t have to be a PTA member to help this important fundraising campaign. This is a fuss free way to raise money for our PTA. You are helping to make a difference at Silver Springs. We want to help make educational and rewarding experiences and lasting memories at Silver Springs for all the students.

All families who IIYC will have a fish with their family name placed around the display case.

The first round of raffle winners for Principal for an hour are: Lucille Schultz, Teddy Partridge, Jane Schimper, and Rhea Maksuti.

The theme for 2018-2019 “Heroes Around Me” will spark imagination and creativity in school and at home. The theme MUST be reflected in the artwork.

Have your child get creative with an original work of art. Students may enter as many entries as they’d like, in one or more of the following categories:

· Dance Choreography

· Film Production

· Literature

· Music Composition

· Photography

· Visual Arts

Deadlines and more information will be given soon.

Supporting the The 7 Habits at home!

Habit #2 Begin with the End in Mind- "I have a plan"

What this means: Have a mission, a clear sense of where you want to go. Think about the end first- how are you going to get there?

“I plan ahead and set goals.”

“I do things that have meaning and make a difference”

“I am important part of my classroom.”

“I look for ways to be a good citizen.”

How can I do this in my life?

1. Write down your goals. It is said that "A goal not written is only a wish.”

2. Lay out your clothes for tomorrow the night before.

3. Write down 3 goals you want to accomplish.
