## Adding Fractions

## Adding Mixed Numbers

Step 1: convert the mixed number into a improper fraction

4 2/5 = 22/5 ,1 6/8 = 14/8

Step 2: find the common denominator

5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,

8,14,24,32,40

Step 3: Multiply the nominator with same number you used to find out the denominator

22x8 = 176/40 , 15x5=75/40

step 4: Add them

176/40 + 75/40 =251/40

Step 5: convert back into Mixed Numbers

6 11/40

## Adding Improper Fractions

Step 1: find the lost common denominator

5,10

2,4,6,8,10

Step 2: Multiply the nominator by what you multiplied the denominator by

12x5 = 60/10 , 9x2 = 18/10

Step 3: Add them together

60/10 + 18/10 = 78/10

Step 4: Convert back into Mixed number

7 8/10

## Adding Proper Fractions

Step 1: First find the common denominator

2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18

9,18

Step 2: multiply the nominator with the same number used to get the denominator

5x2= 10/18 ,9x1 = 9/18

Step 3: Add them

10/18 + 9/18 =19/18

## Subtracting Fractions

## Subtracting Mixed Numbers

**Question: 3 2/3 - 2 1/6**

Step 1: Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction.

3x3+2=11/3

6x2+1=13/6

Step 2: Find a common denominator.

3,6

6

Step 3: Multiply the numerator and the denominator by what it takes to get to the common denominator.

11x2=22/6

13/6 stays the same

Step 4: Subtract.

22/6 - 13/6= 9/6

Step 5: Convert your answer into a mixed number.

**1 3/6 or 1 1/2**

## Subtracting Improper Fractions

**Question: 11/8 - 6/5**

Step 1: Find a common denominator.

8,16,24,32,40

5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40

Step 2: Multiply the numerator and the denominator by what it takes to get to the common denominator.

Denominator: 8x5=40 Numerator: 11x5=55, 55/40

Denominator: 5x8=40 Numerator: 6x8= 48, 48/40

Step 3: Subtract.

55/40 - 48/40= 7/40

Step 4: Simplify (if possible).

**7/40**

## Subtracting Proper Fractions

Question: 5/7 - 9/10

Step 1: Find a common denominator.

7,14,21,28,35,42,49,56,63,70

10,20,30,40,50,60,70

Step 2: Multiply the numerator and the denominator by what it takes to get to the common denominator.

Denominator: 7x10=70 Numerator: 5x10=50, 50/70

Denominator: 10x7=70 Numerator: 9x7=63,63/70

Step 3: Subtract.

63/70 - 50/70= 13/70

Step 4: Simplify (if possible).

**13/70**
