Room 212 News #32

Thank you for Teacher Appreciation Week!

I really appreciated all the flowers, notes, cards and thoughtful comments from students last week. All of us at Bryant had a wonderful week, thanks to the kindness of students and parents. The PTO provided a great lunch on Wednesday, and there were many donations of incredible desserts for Friday. Thank you!

This Week:

  • Monday - finish NWEA and make-ups
  • Thursday - Field Trip to Kensington (need sack lunch/drink) Please let me know if your child will need a sack lunch from school so I can place the order.

Library Books - please return by Thursday

As we enter the last 6 weeks of school, please make sure your child is returning his/her library books on Thursdays. Ms. Rhode printed out overdue notices which were put in the Orange Folders on Friday. Thank you!

Kensington Trip - Thursday

This is a full day trip (9:30-2:30). We will spend most of the trip outside. Please dress your child for the weather.

Also, remember to pack a lunch and drink. If your child will get a sack lunch from school, please let me know by Monday so I can order it. Lunch must still be nut-free.

A decision to cancel the trip due to weather conditions will generally not be made until the morning of, so please send your student ready, even if it is cold or wet.

Solid Shapes and Equal Parts

Last week students began dividing shapes into equal parts. Students cut paper into halves and we also introduced the concept of fourths.

We also looked at solid shapes. We'll look at the flat and curved surfaces of these shapes, as well as the vertices and edges. Students will continue to build with three dimensional blocks and become more familiar with their mathematical names.

Writer's Workshop

We will begin writing All About books this week. We've been looking at the features of non-fiction and how we might include them in our own books.

The Great Pencil Challenge!

Ask your child about the Great Pencil Challenge. A few weeks ago, students received two new pencils, labeled with their class number. We've had several "check-ins," and those who still have their two pencils are on the "Pencil Honors" list. There have also been random prizes, like a new pencil or stickers. It is amazing how responsible students have become (and how few new pencils we've had to use). Of course, there are still extra pencils for those in need of one!

Lunch with a Loved One

Join your student for lunch on May 18 (Pattengill May 19). You may purchase pre-sale tickets for the Ice Cream Social during this lunch period. First grade lunch starts at 12:02.

Fact Families on a Triangle

Wondering what to do with all the triangles coming home with the homework? They can be used as flashcards. Once your child has cut them out, you can cover the top of the triangle with your finger and your child must figure out the sum of the bottom numbers. Or, cover a lower corner, and your student is finding the answer to a subtraction fact. The black dot should always be at the top.

Volunteer During Centers

Currently we have help from college students or parents on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We welcome help during Guided Reading/centers or Guided Math/centers, if you are available.

  • Tuesday, 10:00am or 1:10pm
  • Thursday, 10:25am or 1:40pm

Let me know if you are interested!
