Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 22nd October 2021
MultiFaith Day
Exploring faith in the Early Years
As well as learning about Christianity, we also looked at the ways Hindus celebrate Diwali. The children really enjoyed making Diva lamps and bright rangoli patterns on the white board, in chalks, and using collage materials and mixed media.
The children have learnt that there are many faiths with their own beliefs and we should respect the beliefs of others.
Exploring Judaism in Year 1 and Year 2
In Year 1 the children acted the story out with props to represent the Greek soldiers and the Maccabees. Afterwards the children thought about the way the story of Hanukkah links to the values we explore in school. Year 1 carefully made menorahs using pipe cleaners, cereal and tissue paper.
Exploring Islam in Year 4 and Year 6
The children also looked at a prayer mat and thought about the ways that Muslims pray on a daily basis, comparing and contrasting how Christians pray to God.
Exploring Hinduism in Year 3 and Year 5
In Year 5 the children started by looking at how Hinduism developed and that is in one of the oldest faiths in the world. The children looked at the Vedas and how these were passed on through the generations over time before there was written scripture.
In Year 3 and Year 5 the children also had the opportunity to taste typical Indian foods that Hindus might eat at a celebratory event.
Goodbye Mrs Connor
Mrs Connor has been such a caring member of our Early Years staff, helping many children to settle into school and get off to a flying start. She has also shown great care and love to children from across the school in Oscar's.
The children gave her a special card that they had made along with a gift. Mrs Connor gave the children an apple tree which they could watch as it grows during their time at the school.
We will really miss Mrs Connor, she has been a great asset to our school and we all wish her every success for the future.
Goodbye Jen
She has been a fantastic support to all the children and we will really miss her.
On behalf of the governors, staff and most importantly the children we would like to thank Mrs Ross for all that she has done to help the children have a happy lunchtime!
Reading Stars
We were delighted to be able to award our first Reading Stars of the year this week to Beth, Emery, Oliver, Bethany, Eva and Ben.
Lots of children are making good progress towards achieving their reading stars and our aim for the year is for every child to have at least their year group's reading star badge.
School Update
Dear Parents and Carers
It has been a very busy half term with lots happening in school. Thank you so much for all the support that we have received over the last half term. We have lots more exciting learning planned to take us up to Christmas and we do hope you have a good break with your family and loved ones over the next week.
Community Day
Although it is difficult to interact directly with our local community, we do feel it is hugely important for our children to know who they are and the community within which they belong. As part of our PSHE work we will be having a school community day in the week beginning 8th November 2021.
If you have any ideas about ways in which you, as a valuable member of our school family, can contribute - eg Zoom chat with a class etc, please do let us know by emailing admin@riponcathedral.n-yorks.sch.uk.
It was great that so many parents and carers were able to have time with staff to discuss how children are attaining and progressing. If for any reason you didn't make an appointment and would still like to speak to your child's class teacher, please do contact them on their email address or via the school office so that a phone call can be organised after the half term break.
Covid Update
As I am sure you are aware confirmed cases of COVID in the Harrogate District are well above the national average and higher than other areas in North Yorkshire.
To complicate the situation there are lots of colds and illnesses that have very similar symptoms to COVID. We do continue to ask that if your child has any symptoms, even if they are mild or accompanied by other cold like symptoms which are typical with the delta variant (runny nose, sore throat etc) that you do access a PCR test. Where ever possible please do use a mobile drive in/walk in centre as this system is significantly more efficient than accessing tests through the postal system. Please do inform school as soon as the PCR outcome is known so that we can respond accordingly.
Have a great half term.
Many thanks for your continued support

Sponsored climb/bounce Change of Date 1st November 2021
Unfortunately due to the heavy rain forecast for Tuesday, we had to postpone our sponsored climb and bounce. We are hopeful that we will be going ahead on the first day back. To pay in any sponsor money, just head to ParentPay where an optional payment item has been set up, thank you.
For details, please see the letter below from our School Ambassadors:
We are having a sponsored climb for children in Years 3-6 and a fabulous sponsored bounce for Early Years and Years 1 and 2. This sponsored event is very important as it will raise money for learning beyond the classroom. This includes the work we do with Forest Schools and outdoor adventurous activities. These are great parts of the curriculum that all class enjoy because they give us new opportunities that we can’t do in the classroom. We develop our skills in design technology, science and many other subjects. We also gain the ability to explore and work together to achieve goals. This is a great part of our school.
To support these important learning opportunities we are asking children to get sponsors from family and friends (using the sponsor form sent home with your child) for their terrific climbing (to the top of the wall) and brilliant bouncing (non-stop for 10 minutes). Parents can then collect the cash and make a donation via ParentPay. We hope this will be a great way that the children of Cathedral School can support our curricular opportunities.
Get climbing and bouncing!

Oscar's Club Christmas Dates!
We are in the process of confirming Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd December as our Christmas Holiday Club dates. Booking will go live as soon as our building management company confirm. We will not be holding the club in the October half term break.
We are finding that the breakfast and after school clubs are busier than ever now that parents are returning to work away from the home. However, we still have room so do make sure you are set up on the booking site so that you can arrange any childcare needs.
Please contact Mrs Rich in the office if you have any questions or experience issues logging on.
