Welcome Back! Happy New Year!
There is quite a bit happening. Wrestling and Dance will both start next week and these activities are open to 6th graders. 6th graders will start a new round of clubs during recess time on Monday. Students were able to sign up for Board Games, Music (piano and guitar), Art Club, and WIN (Whatever I Need- opportunity to get caught up on missing assignments or read).
KMS is also excited to welcome Mrs. Sara Bercy, Choir teacher back to our school from Northstar elementary. There is now an opportunity for 6th grade students to join Choir.
On Friday, January 6, we pushed out updates and changes to the KMS Student Handbook. Every student iPad has a KMS Student Handbook App. Please take a moment and review the Attendance/Tardy, and After School Reflection sections on pages 8-10. Starting next week, students who accumulate three unexcused Tardies will be assigned an After School Reflection. Students may also receive an After School Reflection for poor behavior choices. Parents will be contacted when a Reflection is assigned. Mr. Burton, Principal, Kodiak Middle School sent out an email letter on Wednesday, January 4th explaining this new opportunity for students to learn and reflect on ways to grow and change behaviors.
We're looking forward to finishing out the first semester, and getting a great start on Second Semester. Before we know it, Spring Break will be here!

This week we spent finishing up a formative assessment (basically a quiz/checkpoint) on summary writing for anyone that was absent before the break. Students will be getting back their feedback on Monday and have the opportunity to try again, if they received a failing grade. We also spent the week learning about capitalization, specifically proper nouns. We are finishing up summary and capitalization expectations next week, and we will be starting our class novel with the second semester! Next Thursday will also be our FastBridge assessment for reading!
This week we have learned the Canadian provinces and territories. We’ve also spent time identifying human features and physical features of a place by analyzing photos, working in teams, and making inferences. We will continue to focus on the Geography theme of place.
In math class, we worked on graphing positive and negative coordinate pairs on a grid. We did a fun graphing assignment this week that revealed a picture when the correct points were placed on a grid – a robot! Students then got to color and decorate their designs and they will be on display in the 6th grade hall.
I was out in December for over a week due to illness and then a required surgery. I am recovering well, but have been behind on updating grades for this reason. I am working hard on getting caught up with entering assignments that have been submitted, and hope to have everything updated by this Wednesday (Jan 11, 2023) before report cards are printed the following week. If you see an error in your child’s grade, please feel free to email me at aotto02@kibsd.org if you would like and I will work on it. Thank you.
Introducing: Mrs. Rounsaville- long-term sub for Mr. Bechtol
Camai😊 I’m Mrs. Rounsaville and I will be the sixth grade PE teacher for the next few weeks. I hope you had a wonderful break. We started off together learning Line Dancing and the students performed wonderfully. We are going over fitness goals and group games for the next few weeks. Then we will do a two week unit on Native Youth Olympics. I look forward to getting to know your child and don’t hesitate to email or call if you have questions.
I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break. GT Students are encouraged to continue to speak with me and complete the GT Work Release Form with their extension ideas! Semester two is a great place to begin to plan learning extensions! If you have any questions or are in need of any support, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at kyle.deuling@kibsd.org.
If you see something that belongs to you call Ms. Kim at 907-486-7459, and she will connect your lost item(s) with your student. :)
