Doyle Day 2013
Wonderland, Panem, Whoville, Neverland, Sherwood Forest. Oh! The Places You’ll Go … if you read! Doyle Day 2013 swept us to Hogwarts with the theme song from Harry Potter drifting through the auditorium door as we entered the world of reading. Joining us for our celebration were Geri McMullin and Tyler Tomlinson, our School Board Representatives, Dr. Weitzel, our Assistant Superintendent, and fourteen retired staff members. Kindergarten student, Maren Meo, lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a spirited medley of songs played by 16 returning Soaring Eagles in the Lenape Jazz Band.
Emmett Infante was recognized by Scholastic Read 180 for his hard work and improvement in reading. He received a check for $1,200, the complete set of Harry Potter books, and $1,000 Scholastic Gift Certificate for his teacher, Mrs. Veisz.
Mrs. Copland announced our first honored guest, Ms. Ellen Mager, owner of Booktender’s Secret Garden children’s bookstore. Ellen has introduced a myriad of authors who have visited our school over the years, and has sponsored book fairs and author book signings. We appreciate her service to our school.
Next on stage was Doyle’s Idol performed by our teachers with Mr. Levy portraying Woolbur and Mrs. Veisz playing Turkey Trouble. It is then that Lee Harper, book illustrator extraordinaire, realized that the next presentation was about his contribution to the Doyle community. We thanked Mr. Harper for the many visits where he has worked with our children to teach them the research and skills involved with illustrating books.

Katherine Baltes was the 2013 recipient of the Doyle Scholarship. She spoke to our students about the value of hard work. She thanked her teachers for the contribution they have made to her learning and she also spoke of her first love: reading. We are proud of Katherine’s achievements and wish her well as she begins her college studies at the University of Notre Dame.
Doyle Day closed with students and teachers singing Read Me a Story and we enjoyed a sweet rendition of Books sung by Mrs. McPhee, Mrs. Hriniak, Mrs. Strohl, and Mrs. Neff with student performers: Ingrid Stopperich, Gavin Derham, Annie Castor, Flannan Reilly, Ellie Galt and Bryan O’Neill. And so we “ease on down the road” with the message that reading can take us to faraway places, back in time, into the future, and into imaginary worlds. So, of course, the first trip we are going to take this summer is to the library!
