Community:
We continue to work on our 4 Be Statements. As we progress toward 4th grade we are working with the students on building more responsibility both personally and academically. Most students are making fine progress.
Language Workshop:
In Language Workshop, we have learned many valuable lessons from the various folktales from around the world. Our readers collectively unpacked the lessons and themes that unfolded in each book. Some even provided lessons that we could use today to make our lives and the lives of others even better. For example, several of our students noticed the importance after reading and unpacking Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears that one should not make assumptions about a situation or person before finding out the facts. These books have helped us grow a better understanding of people and views of others around the world.
What influences the lessons we learn?
Reading Workshop:
In Reader’s Workshop, the students have read and studied a variety of folktales. They have learned about the structure of this genre and analyzed the themes and lessons that unfolded in these texts. In addition, they have noticed the similar story elements: creative characters, problems, and resolutions that are consistent in most folktales. As a result, they have found this genre study to be quite enjoyable and relatable.
Writing Workshop:
In Writer’s Workshop, the students have been working very hard on creating adapted versions of fairy tales. The students got to pick a fairy tale, choose how they were going to adapt it, and are now writing their very own adapted fairy tale. The students have been having a great time with this fun writing assignment. They have really “adapted” the fairy tales in many different ways. They will be very entertaining to read when they come home later in the month.
Math:
This week we started unit 5 on time, measurement, and line plots. Click on the Grade 3 Unit 5 Parent Letter for strategies and ideas to use at home. Students will learn how to tell the exact time - to the nearest minute and use AM/PM. Encourage your son or daughter to use analog clocks and not just digital ones.
We will also learn about elapsed time and solve real world problems around this topic. For example: How much time does it take you to get ready in the morning if you get up at 7:19 AM and need to leave by 8:07 AM? or How long is our school day at Rose Glen? Students should be drawing a number line to solve these like the one below.
Science:
The third graders have been using what they learned about inquiry to study an animal of choice. We have been using the online library resources to help us answer our questions. If students want they can also use books from our class library, Rose Glen library, or even a book from home. Ask your son or daughter to share what animal they picked and what they’ve learned so far!
From their research, they are creating a venn diagram to compare/contrast their animal with the crayfish. They are also learning about their animals adaptations and creating a food chain. Finally we will study the life cycles of their animals.
Digital Citizenship:
In Digital Citizenship, the students have been working on determining what student approved sites give them the most information depending on the topic. The students have done a good job of not only determining the sites that give the most information, but also why they have chosen those sites. They have also learned how to get better information using a keyword search on safe sites like kidrex.org.
Report Cards:
Student report cards go live for viewing on Friday, March 15th. Please make sure you log in to Infinite Campus to see current progress for academic subjects, characteristics of lifelong learners, and comments.
Thank You!
Thank you for taking time out of your very busy schedules to come to conferences and find out how your child is progressing both socially and academically this year. We enjoyed our time with each of you and can see that you care very much about your child and their learning.
Swim Team:
Remember, if you would like to join the Rose Glen Swim Team, practices begin March 20th at 4 pm at West High School. The swim team is FREE and is open to all boys and girls in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades who can swim 25 yards without stopping.
It is not mandatory, but most kids like to get Swim Team Spirit Wear. You can still order Spirit Wear! The shop closes Monday, March 11th.
Order your swim team Spirit Wear on this site: https://skyhigh.orderpromos.com/RoseGlen
Parents are required to drive their children to the practices and pick them up on time. (Carpooling is a great idea!)
Each child is required to attend three of the five practices in order to participate in the swimming meet on Saturday, April 6th.
The 5 Practices are as follows. Please be ready to enter the pool by 4pm!
Wednesday, March 20th @ 4:00 - 5:00
Friday, March 22nd @ 4:00 - 5:00
