Gladiator News
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School
September 12-16, 2016
Four day weeks always seem to be the busiest! We had our first athletic events of the school year: football and volleyball. Our students scrimmaged against Folks Middle School. If you attended the football scrimmage you know how crowded the parking lot can get, so I suggest carpooling, if able, for future games. Admission prices are: $2 for students and $3 for adults. (Small bills appreciated.) We will have concessions available. Next week we play Stevenson Wildcats!
Friday, September 16th will be our first early release day of the school year. Students will be released at 12:30 and may wear their PE uniforms to school on that day.
Please plan to attend our Parent Tech/Information Night on Monday, September 12th from 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm. This year we are adding two sessions about high school credit classes on the middle school campus and information about endorsements at high school. An information flyer is included in the newsletter.
On Wednesday, our counselors spoke to the students taking a high school credit class and discussed attendance, GPA, and semester exams. The students need to return a signed form to the teacher about these requirements. If your child is taking Spanish, Algebra, Geometry, or Art 1 MS, please ask about that form if you have not seen it this week.
The link below contains a great article about raising our children to have grit and persistence. Carol Dweck shares six tips parents and educators can use to promote a growth mindset.

Many thanks to the 6th grade parents that attended our Coffee & Conversation on Friday morning. It was a pleasure getting to meet you and hear about your child's first three weeks of middle school.
It's a GREAT day to be a Gladiator!

GLADIATOR GAMES OCTOBER 21, 2016!
The Gladiator Games is our annual PTA fundraiser in which grade levels compete and earn points in a series of competitions, held during the school day.
ALL students and teachers are involved and the competitive gladiator spirit is STRONG at HGMS.
While participation in the games is free, students are encouraged to donate a minimum of $20 to receive an official Gladiator Games t-shirt. Donations raised will fund the HGMS Library, school-wide events, technology and equipment requests submitted by teachers, and 8th grade Field Day.
