October 29, 2020 Work Session on Elementary Boundaries

The School Board will hold a Work Session on Oct. 29 at 6:30 PM and a public hearing on Dec. 1. New boundaries will be adopted on Dec. 3.

Summary of the October 22, 2020 School Board Meeting

At the October 22 School Board meeting, the School Board presented its proposed FY 2022 Budget Direction. The School Board is committed to providing a high-quality education to its students and their aim with this budget direction is to ensure APS financially supports its mission in the FY 2022 budget. Summary of the County Board/School Board Budget Work Session

Facing a projected combined budget gap for the current fiscal year of $52 million-$68.8 million, County government and Arlington Public Schools (APS) outlined options for closing that gap during a joint work session on October 21, 2020. Citizen Comment at School Board Meetings

At this time, no in-person public comment will be allowed at Board Meetings, however limited Public Comment will be allowed using a call-in service.


The Public Comment Agenda Item will take place at the beginning of each Board Meeting. ALL public comment will be heard at that time, on both Agenda and Non-Agenda items, and there is a limit of 1 hour for all public comment.


The speaker request form is made active on the website on Friday afternoon of the week before each regular Board meeting. The speaker form is posted at https://www.apsva.us/school-board-meetings/sign-up-to-speak/. Please note, the deadline for signing up to speak is 4 PM two days prior to the Board meeting.


When you sign up you will receive an acknowledgement. The day of the meeting, you will be provided with detailed directions for calling. During the meeting, speakers will be announced in the order that the calls are received.

APS Joins Dialogues on Race and Equity

Arlington Public Schools has joined Arlington County in a new effort to address racial equity and disparities called Dialogues on Race and Equity (DRE). DRE will include a series of virtual community conversations (described below) with individuals, nonprofit organizations, civic associations, faith organizations, and businesses to learn about and address the ways in which Arlington can be a more equitable place for all residents and businesses. 2020 School Bond

In the upcoming election, Arlington voters will be asked whether to approve $52.65 million in School Bonds to maintain and improve school infrastructure and address continued enrollment growth in Arlington County. Calendar Survey for the 2021-22 School Year

The Draft APS Calendar for the 2021-22 School Year is posted at https://www.apsva.us/engage/2021-22-school-year-calendar/.


The community may provide their input by participating in the 2021-22 School Year Questionnaire open from Oct. 19-30.


The current plan is to have the final calendar proposal go to the School Board as an information item at the November 17 meeting, and for approval at the Dec. 3 meeting.

APS seeking volunteers to serve on the APS and School Resource Officers Work Group

The School Board is seeking volunteers to serve on the work group will include students; parents; staff; advisory council members; community members; and the Arlington County Police. The work group of 48 members will be facilitated by a professional facilitator.


Working group members will participate actively in reviewing research, discussing, and formulating recommendations to the Superintendent and School Board on the relationship between APS and ACPD School Resource Officers (SROs). Each group member will attend the December 2020 kick off meeting, the January 2021 town hall, and monthly work group meetings from January to June.


Work group members will work together to formulate recommendations to the Superintendent and School Board for submission in June 2021.

The Arlington School Board values input from parents and members of the community as part of the APS decision-making process. That’s why the school system has established a network of volunteer advisory committees, each one focusing on a specific subject or topic area from instruction to construction.


The School Board is accepting applications for the Advisory Council on Teaching and Learning (Formerly Advisory Council on Instruction), Budget Advisory Council (BAC) and the Aquatics Committee.

School Board Open Office Hours

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person Open Office Hours are suspended and will be held virtually. Information on how to sign up for upcoming Open Office Hours will be communicated through the normal APS channels the Friday before the scheduled Open Office Hours.
