Laurel Park 5th Grade Updates
A Special 5th Grade Edition - May 22, 2020
Special Updates from our Student Support Team
Dear Rising 6th grade families,
Our student support team has prepared some information for you regarding your student’s upcoming transition to middle school. Although it will look a little different this year, we hope to foster just as much excitement and enthusiasm during this special time for them!
Google Meet Q&A Sessions
We are excited to host 3 virtual Q&A sessions with a panel of current middle school students as well as staff members from area middle schools. These sessions will include general information about middle school, but also give your student a chance to ask any questions they may have. If you cannot make it to your track’s assigned meeting, you may attend on a different date.
Track 1 - Monday, June 1, 2:00PM
Track 2 & 3 - Tuesday, June 9, 2:00PM
Track 4 - Monday, June 8, 2:00PM
Google Meet Link Code (same for all 3 sessions): https://meet.google.com/ttn-phwa-kyn
Class Meetings
Our counselors, Mrs. MacEntee and Mrs. Waddell, have been attending 5th grade class meetings to give students a chance to talk about their upcoming transition. Topics of discussion have included emotions, social skills, and question/answer times. If you have specific concerns about how your child may handle the transition, please reach out to them!
Wake County has provided a guide for rising 6th grade families that includes a lot of information about middle school. This is a great place to find answers to general questions you may have!
Locks!
Some middle schools have lockers that require students to use a combination lock. Here are some resources that will allow your student to feel more comfortable using locks:
How to open a combination lock instructions (Youtube)
Free online lock game (contains ads)
More to come…
We are collaborating with our middle schools to provide you the most up to date information regarding virtual tours, open houses, and/or information sessions. Many middle schools are currently working on putting these resources together, and we will let you know about them as soon as they are available.
We encourage students and parents to visit their middle school’s website to learn more about the staff and school culture. Please reach out to Mrs. MacEntee or Mrs. Waddell with any questions you may have. We are so excited for what is to come for each of our rising middle schoolers!
