Interim Superintendent Message
Dear NPS Families,
As you may know, the Newton School Committee recently held a public hearing in response to a petition requesting the creation of “an Academic Principles Advisory Committee (the "Advisory Committee") to serve the citizens of this City regarding establishment of core principles for NPS.” (hearing recording link.) The hearing was mandated by the City of Newton charter, which requires a public hearing to be held when specific requirements are met.
The evening was a model of civic engagement. I am grateful to all who attended for their civility, respectfulness, and meaningful civic discourse on a challenging topic. People from all parts of our community came together to voice their opinion, their concerns, and their feedback to elected officials, our Newton School Committee. Thank you for serving as role models for positive participation, particularly for our young students also in attendance.
Those young students from Franklin Elementary had this to share with us:
"All of the ways that we are the same and different is a big and important part of our school community and makes us better people who will make the world better...We (should) talk about this more, not less."
As a school district, we were grateful to hear so much support for our efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion. The following are a few excerpts from statements made at the hearing:
“When my junior honors students use linear combinations of trigonometric functions to parameterize the path of a point on a rolling wheel, or when they use the hypergeometric distribution to model bad actors trying to change the outcome of a national election, they weren’t distracted by the fact we have a Calculus Project. In fact, several of them are in the Calculus Project.” – NSHS Teacher
“We should teach our teachers that this is something they should recognize as a risk because we’re all a microcosm of our greater society, and bias exists. That’s an objective truth.” – School Committee Member
“We are proud of the work we do to foster excellence in academics as well as critical thinking skills, empathetic citizenship and an anti racist mindset." – NNHS Teacher
“Newton schools are excellent, not in spite of the extensive elective offerings and commitment to racial equity, but because of them.” – NPS parent
Ultimately, the school committee voted unanimously not to approve the petition request. Despite the denial of the request, the School Committee is elected to be responsive to NPS families and the larger Newton community and is charged with approving the district’s systemwide goals. As a district, we are committed to communication and ongoing growth to support our students and care about our relationship with families. If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback about your student’s academic growth, challenge, or mental health, I encourage you to reach out to their teacher(s.)
As a district, our goal is to ensure that all students are supported to achieve at high levels in schools that make them feel safe, valued, and respected. We know that sustaining our efforts to build an inclusive, engaging, challenging, and culturally-responsive organization is essential to preparing students for their futures.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Smith
Interim Superintendent

Office of Civil Rights Complaint Closed
The Newton Public Schools has received notification from the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) at the Department of Education that they have closed the investigation into allegations of discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin (Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.) In a letter dated March 29, 2023, OCR indicated they found no evidence of violation of the law with regard to the staging and production of “Lost and Found” at Newton North High School in January 2023.
“We are pleased that this complaint has been closed and that we may move forward in continuing to provide opportunities for students to perform and express themselves in a variety of ways,” said Kathleen Smith, Interim Superintendent of the Newton Public Schools. “While centered in the stories of the lives of our students of color, no one was turned away or excluded from participating or having a role in the “Lost and Found” production. In fact, we were pleased to have a wonderfully diverse cast and crew who brought the entire show to life.”
Theatre Ink provides opportunities for students to tell and celebrate the narratives and stories of those who have been historically underrepresented. Amplifying the stories, experiences, and history of students of color is just one component of its diverse fine and performing arts programs. The Newton Public Schools remain committed to actively encouraging all students to participate in Fine and Performing Arts programs, particularly students of color, who have been vastly underrepresented in theater programs to date.
Food Allergen - Important Notification!
Please review this Food Allergen Notification Letter for important information on the notification process for allergens in meals served here in the Newton Public Schools. Clear communication is critical to us as we know the seriousness of food allergies for some of our students.
All ingredients for every meal served can be found on the FDMealPlanner website. If your student has a food allergy, we strongly encourage you to check the top nine allergen list and the full ingredient list as close to the day of the meal as possible. It is important to note that food vendors may change ingredients throughout the year.

Newton North AP Award
On April 5, 2023, Newton North was awarded an AP® Access Award at the Massachusetts State House as a part of Advanced Placement® Day. North is one of only 26 high schools in the Commonwealth that was recognized for its commitment to expanding access to AP courses. Criteria for receiving the award included:
At least 40 Black/African American and Latino/Hispanic examinees in 2022 OR 40 low-income examinees
An overall 5 year increase of at least 30% in these examinees from 2017 to 2022
Congratulations to North on this achievement and for continuing to expand access to challenging coursework to student groups traditionally underrepresented in these classes.
Help plan a future path connecting Newton and Needham!
The City of Newton and Town of Needham are working together to study the future use of the former railroad corridor (the Charles River Branch) that historically connected the two communities.
We are looking for your input! See this page to learn more, or read on.
Recreating a connection is a long-term interest and effort. The possibility of a shared-use path would extend the Upper Falls Greenway across the Charles River, across I-95/128, and along the former railroad right of way to Webster Street in Needham Heights. This project is still in the preliminary stages and has not yet been planned, designed, or funded.
To assist with planning, the municipalities received state funding to conduct a feasibility study, which will include a technical analysis, a survey, and two community meetings to describe the project and hear from the public.
The municipalities are considering whether this would be a path for cyclists, pedestrians and similar uses, or if it would also provide public transportation with electric shuttle buses.
Follow this link for more information, including details on community meetings on April 18 and April 26, and to participate in a community survey until April 30.
Thanks for your participation!
