Upcoming General Science Sessions
Region 7 Education Service Center
January 26 - New Science Teacher Cohort (5-12)
Often times, new teachers are overwhelmed their first year in the classroom. This cohort is designed to allow new science teachers time to study their standards, learn and improve teaching strategies, and plan with other teachers. Participants will meet face to face, either in Kilgore or on their own campuses, as well as online throughout the year.
Virtual Session 1/29 - 2/18 Formative Assessment in Secondary Science
How do you know what your students know? Explore the use of formative assessments to inform teacher planning and instruction, to guide student learning, and to target interventions. Take a closer look at how to develop formative assessments and rubrics that are meaningful and lead to more focused teaching and learning.
January 31 - Secondary Science Notebooking
The use of interactive notebooks is one of the most popular practices for increasing student engagement and comprehension in the classroom. In this session, participants will learn about best practices for using notebooks in the science classroom and make and take samples to help you get started!
February 8 - Text Investigations
We are all expected to be teachers of reading, no matter what our subject field or our level of training in reading. We want to make sure that our kids can read, understand, and be "investigators" of the text - textbooks, news articles, primary sources, etc. How can we help our kids become better readers and collaborators, and yet still teach our content? Join us for practical examples you can use.
February 9 - Improving Student's Observation and Inferencing Skills in Secondary Science
In this session, we will learn how to train students in observation and inferencing skills. We will practice various examples and activities of this in the classroom and create a personal plan for implementation.
March 27 - Developing Quality Assessments for Science
Creating assessments to determine student understanding is often the most complicated task teachers face. Are my questions rigorous enough? Are my tests aligned with the TEKS? Teachers will discuss the purpose of testing and explore various ways to make this process much easier and more effective.
April 9 - High School Science the "Write Way"
In the session, we will look at how to use science notebooks to integrate expository writing into your science instruction in a way that's purposeful and meaningful to you and your students. Come learn tips for implementing various writing strategies for reasoning, data analysis, conclusions, assessments and more.
April 12 - Building Academic Vocabulary with Fun and Inventive Activities
Do your students have the vocabulary necessary to do well in class or on the state assessments? Word knowledge disparity among students is a problem that directly impacts academic success. This workshop will explore some ways teachers can apply research-based strategies to their vocabulary instruction, narrowing the gaps and improving students TEKS vocabulary acquisition.
April 30 - Increasing the Rigor in Science
Current science content standards require students to have a greater depth of knowledge and think at higher levels of complexity than ever before. This workshop will demonstrate how to enable students to meet these rigor requirements and promote creative and critical thinking for all students in the science classroom.
