The Great Handshake Challenge

Fifth graders at six TCS elementary schools have mastered the art of looking someone squarely in the eye and giving firm a handshake. It's all part of the Great Handshake Challenge, a competition which provides students with the opportunity to practice the mechanics of a great interview. The students are given two minutes to introduce themselves, give an elevator speech and answer questions.


Elementary students at Central, Tuscaloosa Magnet, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rock Quarry, Skyland and Verner participated in school level competitions this week. The school winners advancing to the next round of competition to be held on The University of Alabama campus next month.

Half Day Ahead!

As a reminder, the Tuscaloosa City Schools has a planned half day scheduled for students on Thursday, December 20. The dismissal time will be as follows:



  • 11:30 a.m. - Elementary Schools, including The Alberta School of Performing Arts
  • 12 noon - Middle Schools, Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools Elementary and Middle
  • 12:30 p.m. - High Schools including STARS Academy and Success Prep


Please note that this is a change from previous scheduled early dismissals. The change is to ensure on time pickup and drop-offs for students.

For TCS employees, December 20 is a full work day.

Holiday Performance Schedule

Students across the system will soon begin participating in holiday performances. TCS strings, band, choral music, theatre, and visual students will present their work in multiple showcase opportunities across Tuscaloosa beginning next month. Mark your calendars and support TCS Arts in Education by attending one of these student performances.

Lace Up Your Running Shoes

The inaugural Bookin' It for TCS Libraries 5k will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at The Alberta School of Performing Arts. This race is designed to help fund Tuscaloosa City Schools' libraries in hopes that all TCS libraries are exemplary! On average, TCS library books are nearly 20 years old. After eight years with no funding, and minimal funding since, TCS libraries are in desperate need of an update to their collections to best serve our students! Participants are encourage to dress like their favorite book character for the race. Awards will be given for top qualifiers as well as best costume and highest school participation. Notice: December Lunch Menus

The Child Nutrition Program will not post menus for the month of December because all schools will make their menus based on inventory on hand.
