Happenings for the Week
February 3, 2020
- Today we have an early dismissal for Department PLCs with a quick training in the LGLC prior to the PLC. See Monday for more details.
Need Suggestions For Principal's Council
Over the next few months we will be preparing for the move across the street. One of the most important logistical decisions will be how to orient the students and what their day will look like in the building. I would like the students to help decide on an orientation process. I also would like student advice on how we will operate when students arrive and during lunches. Art Balzotti and myself will meet with these students over the next few months to incorporate their ideas and suggestions int next year's plans.
We are looking for student suggestions to sit on this committee. We are looking for about a total of eight (8) 9th-11th graders. If you have a student who you believe would have thoughtful suggestions and insight on next year's plans please share their name with me via email.
Thank you,
Billy

- Today we have an early dismissal for Department PLCs with a quick training in the LGLC prior to the PLC.
- The training will be on the Teacher Recommendation process via SchoolBrains. If you have a Chromebook or laptop, please bring it. We have made a few revisions to last year's process. We felt this training was better suited for Department PLCs then during Academy PLCs in case folks wanted to discuss in their departments afterwards. It would give the opportunity for folks to collaborate on recommendations. Below is our bell schedule.

Trimester 2 Literacy Update From Mary Kew
Now that Trimester 2 is well under way, I wanted to send out some literacy reminders!
In order to maximize student success, they should be actively engaged in rigorous discipline-specific reading and writing every day! Please see the Literacy Board in the mailroom for some ideas for quick literacy strategies that you can use in your classroom and shops daily. The more you use them, the more they become part of your routine, the more improved your students will become in your content area. Please call me, email me, or come see me for more information regarding these quick and easy strategies! I am happy to come in and model them for you in your classroom or shop or you are always welcome in my classroom to see them modeled as well!
In addition to daily literacy, please make sure your students engage in at least 1 text-dependent literacy exercise each trimester. Don't be afraid to have students complete these kind of assignments more often. The more they write, the easier it becomes for them, and the more their skills improve. Students should read a discipline-specific text and engage in active reading. This could be from your textbook, an industry journal, periodical, etc. The content of the reading should be something you are working on in your class or shop and tie to your content standards. Amy McHugh in the library is an excellent resource to help you find appropriate text. The following is a few reminders for your Trimester 2 Literacy:
· The writing should be tied to a piece of text from your discipline that you are currently working on.
· Students should show evidence of active reading. I'm happy to model this for you and your students. They will resist active reading unless you insist on it!
· Writing responses should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs and follow the CCT Writing Order of Operations and be scored with the CCT Writing Rubric. When teachers use the same rubric for writing school
wide, it increases the success of student writing. If you are planning to have your students write an essay with an introduction and a conclusion, such as a 5 paragraph essay, please see me for more
resources.
· I’m available to help you create a prompt as well as model active reading and writing in your classroom and shop!
· Literacy Resources are available on the website under Faculty Resources.
Thank you so much for supporting our students’ literacy skills!!!

Fresh Day: February 14th
The Build the Community Committee wanted to send out some preliminary information on FRESH Day for this year. For those of you new to the building, FRESH Day is a school-wide celebration where freshmen are welcomed into their new shops.
This year, FRESH Day will be held on Friday, February 14th. We will run a one hour early dismissal schedule. However, we will call for Juniors to go to their shops at 1:15.
We are always trying to improve FRESH Day to make it more enjoyable for both staff and students. Based on feedback from last year, we are going back to an all school celebration in the gym. We will not be asking shops to perform skits. Shops will be called up individually and names will be called to welcome the new 9th grade members. Thank you to John Ganss, who has graciously volunteered (was coerced) to be our emcee for the event! We will be giving students individual welcome certificates this year stating their new shop. We will be seating everyone by Academies in the gym, with freshmen in the front few rows.
The library will be open to students with noted anxiety who feel they cannot attend the event. The library is not open as a catchall for students who just don't want to attend the ceremony. Feel free to see Erica with any questions about this. We ask that you give students a pass if they are going to the library.
We will be sending out a reminder as the event gets closer. Please respond to this email or see one of the committee members with any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your support in building the CCT community!
