Love & Logic for Middle School Families

This is a 6-week workshop held for parents on Tuesday evenings at TJMS. Previously, these have been hosted at other elementary schools, and the classes are ideal for middle school parents, too. Registration is open to both Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson Middle School parents. The registration will close at 50 parents, so register soon for this popular event! Hilltop Food & Supply Drive Success!

Thanks so much to the many families who donated items during our Hilltop Neighborhood House Food Drive! In just one week we collected 2,900 food and household items along with 3,000 diapers. We are so proud of our Ben Franklin family for stepping up to help our Valparaiso community family. Thank you!

Plastic Bottle Cap Recycling Competition

Ben Franklin is participating in our city wide plastic bottle cap collection to help promote awareness of recycling efforts in our community. Our city is hoping for every school participating to collect at least 400 pounds of caps--SO ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Our STEAM Club is helping with this contest that will run until April 12th. All caps can be dropped off in the bin by the main office. For more details, visit the City of Valparaiso's website.

Women's Club Writing Contest

Congratulations to our students who received awards from the Valparaiso Women's Club Writing Contest! We are proud of you!

Thank You, Sheriff Reynolds!

Sheriff Reynolds shared an important message with all of our kids about the heroin epidemic in Porter County and how the choices they make impact their future. Here is what Sheriff Reynolds shared on his Facebook page:

“One of the most important presentations I give all year is the opportunity to speak with students about the realities of drug use in Porter County. Thank you to Ben Franklin Middle School and Thomas Jefferson Middle School for allowing me to meet with the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to impress upon them what a problem the heroin epidemic is in our community. I am thankful to Herb Stepherson for sharing his personal story of drug use and recovery and his willingness to answer questions from the students and staff. Education and prevention are the keys to combat this epidemic, and (I appreciate) any opportunity I have to share this message.”

We are thankful for his willingness to come to Ben Franklin. It was a day our students learned important lessons that will stick with them for life!

Helping Housing Opportunities

When our Team Peace and Lunch "able" students found out there is a great need for dish soap, hand soap, and laundry soap for Housing Opportunities, they decided to do something about it! Throughout the past week facts about Housing Opportunities were shared with students through our morning announcements including:

  • Last year, Housing Opportunities gave a safe home to 406 adults and 238 children!
  • Did you know the average age of a homeless individual in our own community is just 8 years old?
Our 8th Grade Team Peace and Lunch"able" students will have the opportunity to deliver the items collected and stock the shelves at the shelter this week. We are proud of our Ben Franklin students and families for supporting the mission of helping the homeless and low-income families in our community. Thank you!
