We’re off to a great start to the week! Please see below for "need to know" information and upcoming events at Hugh Mercer.

Colder Weather:

The weather is getting chilly, so please send your child in layers.

We will continue to have outdoor recess, so be sure to send a jacket and hat with your child each day (gloves too, as the weather gets colder). If you need assistance with getting cold weather gear for your child, please contact our school social worker, Barrie Massey at bmassie@cityschools.com

Turkey Trot (being held during the school day during the regular special area rotation):

Our fabulous PE department will be hosting a fun run during specials times on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. The Turkey Trot is an organized fun run to support physical activity.

Parents may attend during their child’s time and must follow our safety guidelines.

Turkey Trot Times:

K - 12:25

1st - 1:20

2nd - 2:20

3rd - 8:55

4th - 11:00

5th - 10:00

Turkey Trot Safety Guidelines:

  • All visitors must wear a face covering at all times
  • Parents are welcome to attend but must stay in the designated area (roped off section in the middle of the field)
  • Families will need to park in the back lot and report directly to the field/designated spectator section
  • Visitors will NOT be permitted inside the building
  • Please, stay only for your child’s Turkey Trot time

If your child is ill, please don’t send them to school. If they test positive for COVID-19, please call the school at 540-372-1115 and keep them at home. If your child is waiting for test results, please keep them home as well. Please, call the school if someone in your home has tested positive for COVID or if your child has been exposed and keep them at home until you speak with our team.

If your child has to stay home due to quarantine or isolation, please call us. We will be sure your child has work from school, their laptop/ipad, and that they are enrolled in our virtual learning experience “Second Shift Teaching”. A second shift teacher will zoom with your student after-school hours. Let your child’s teacher know if you need more information on Second Shift, if your child must stay home due to COVID-19.

Please, be sure your child’s teacher and our office have (3) THREE daytime phone numbers in case we need to reach you during the day. It is sometimes necessary for us to connect with you right away.

  • November 17 - Interim reports will be sent home.
  • November 17 - Turkey Trot fun run (see below)

  • November 23 - Early Dismissal for students (students are dismissed at 11:00 am)
  • November 24-26 - NO SCHOOL
