Covid Prevention Strategies
We want our community to protect themselves against COVID-19. Here are some ways to protect your family:
Keep children who are sick at home. Don’t send them to school.
Teach your children to wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
Teach your children to stay at least six feet away from people who are sick.
People who are sick should stay home from work or school and avoid other people until they are better. If you have questions, please contact your school nurse, healthcare provider, or your local board of health or check the CDC website
More information can be found on the Oregon Department of Education’s Ready Schools, Safe Learners page, the Oregon Health Authority’s COVID-19 page and TTSD. If you have any questions, please contact the office at 503-431-4800.
Screen for Symptoms at Home
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
Please notify the school if your student has asthma, seasonal allergies, or another CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITION that would cause coughing or other covid-like symptoms. Your doctor should fax this information to the school office at 503-431-4810 so that your student is not inadvertently excluded from school.
Exclusion Guidelines
If your child presents with any of the following symptoms at home or at school, there are specific exclusion guidelines we will follow.
Primary Symptoms:
Fever greater than 100.4
Chills
Cough
Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing
New loss of taste or smell
If your child has any of the above primary symptoms, the Tigard-Tualatin School District requires your child to stay home for 10 days after the onset of symptoms unless:
Proof of a negative COVID-19 test result OR A doctor’s note indicating a different diagnosis and that COVID-19 is not suspected; AND
Be fever free for 24 hours without use of fever-reducing medications, such as Tylenol or ibuprofen;
Symptoms must be improving.
Non-Primary Symptoms:
Headache
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Fatigue (tiredness)
Sore throat
Muscle aches
Congestion or runny nose
If your child has any of the above non-primary symptoms, which may indicate a COVID infection, you may want to consult your healthcare provider; otherwise, please consult the district’s communicable disease guidelines for returning to school: WHEN CAN MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL? 20-21
HEADACHE: MAY RETURN AFTER symptom-free OR with orders from doctor
DIARRHEA: MAY RETURN AFTER 48 hours symptom-free
VOMITING: MAY RETURN AFTER 48 hours symptom-free
Rapid Covid Testing Available at School
For students and staff who become ill at school, we have been offered the opportunity (and trained) to provide rapid Covid testing to help alleviate barriers to returning to school in a timely manner. This testing is not mandatory. If you choose not to give written consent, your child will not be tested. If you'd like your student to have access to the testing, you will need to fill out and sign the consent form then return it to the school. The form is attached to this message.
If your student gets sick at school, they can reduce the amount of time at home if they have a negative test. If your student has Covid symptoms and has consent to have testing, we would test the student before sending them home. The student will still go home and be able to return after being symptom-free according to the timeline in the exclusion document. They may not need a separate Covid test from a healthcare professional and may not need to quarantine for 10 days.
Under the direction of a trained staff member, the student will swab their own nose for the test. It is a shallow swab, so they don't need to go high into their nasal cavity.
This program is intended to test symptomatic and exposed students and school staff only. The Abbott BinaxNOW tests should not be used to screen asymptomatic individuals or those without a known exposure to COVID-19.
Antigen diagnostic tests (e.g., BinaxNOW) work by:
Finding larger pieces of evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is actively infecting a person
Detecting specific, 3-dimensional viral proteins (“antigens”) on the outside of the virus
- The Antigen diagnostic test is:
Fast
- Fifteen minute turnaround time, estimate 30 min total time
Easy
- Do not need a deep nasal swab or a complex machine
- Do not need to be a healthcare professional to do the test
- BinaxNOW manufacturer also has same antigen test “home kit” on the market
Fiebre superior a 100,4
Escalofríos
Tos
No tenga fiebre durante 24 horas sin usar medicamentos para reducir la fiebre, como Tylenol o ibuprofeno;
Los síntomas deben mejorar.
Síntomas no primarios:
Dolor de cabeza
Náuseas o vómitos
Diarrea
Fatiga (cansancio)
Dolor de garganta
Dolores musculares
