Holly Academy News & Views
March 12, 2021
What a difference a year makes! On March 12, 2020, we wrote a communication to families outlining the activities that we would have to cancel due to the first COVID-19 cases diagnosed in Michigan. The very next day, Governor Whitmer closed all schools in Michigan. We all thought that we would be closed for a few weeks and would return to school after spring break. How little we knew! Fast forward to a year later and many schools in Michigan haven't opened yet for in-person teaching and learning! I am so proud to be part of our Holly Academy community. Our staff and Board of Directors have prioritized student achievement during the pandemic, just as we had prior to last March. We are one of the very few districts to have provided full time in-person teaching and learning this school year. We also created Husky Virtual Academy to provide instruction to our virtual learners. We could not have pulled off these feats without the commitment from our Husky families. Thank you for partnering with us to do what is best for our students. We continue to "dare to be remarkable" even in the most adverse of times! It's great to be a Husky!

Cross Country
Hello Holly Academy families! It is great to see the sunshine and temperatures rising daily! After having to cancel our previous sports seasons due to COVID, I'm excited to announce we plan on running our cross country program this spring! Our practices usually begin when we return from spring break, so if your Husky is interested in running, we need you to fill out the form on the following link with your child's information. This information is important, as it is how the coaches and I will contact you!
https://www.hollyacademy.org/sports/
Included on the web page is our Student Athletic Handbook, which has to be filled out completely. Your Husky will also need to complete the required sports physical. Please print and have all forms filled out completely.
Cross country is one of our co-ed sports and open to students from fifth through eighth grades. Fifth and sixth graders run one mile, while seventh and eighth graders run two miles. Running is a great life-long activity that can be part of a healthy lifestyle. I encourage every student to try it! Here are a few benefits to running:
- Boost your immune system
- Strengthens your lungs
- Promotes a sense of well being
- Burns calories and aids in weight loss
- Builds and tones muscle
- Increases bone density
- Supports healthy blood sugar levels
- Promotes cardiovascular health
- Strengthens your heart
- Promotes a positive self-image
Please be aware, I anticipate there may be restrictions by MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association), whose rules we follow, and MDHHS (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services), such as wearing a mask by both the runners and spectators and social distancing by the spectators. By signing up for cross country, both the athletes and families are agreeing to these and any other requirements by MHSAA and MDHHS.
Lastly, but equally important, I am in search of cross country coaches to organize and manage the runners. If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible, melerojose@hollyacademy.org, or 810-845-5484.
I look forward to seeing everyone on the cross country course!

PTO Elections
Elections for the PTO Board are held at the April meeting. There will be some turnover of our current Board for the 21/22 school year. Typically, we like prospective candidates to have attended three PTO meetings prior to being nominated for a Board seat. Should you be interested and not meet this requirement, please follow-through by emailing PTO.hollyacademy@gmail.com, we do not want to turn away any candidates that have a passion to serve! Power of the Pack!
