A Message from Our Administrators
Dear BSE Families,
The leaves are changing and the air is cool. Fall Break is upon us. Can you believe it? It feels like yesterday that we were buzzing through the halls meeting our teachers for Ice Cream Social. We wanted to thank you for trusting us with your child(ren) this first quarter.
Our teachers and staff are working hard to ensure that every day your child is:
- Excited to come inside the building
- Wonder what they will be able to get their hands on to learn more about
- Having fun and playing
- Connecting with themselves as readers and writers
- Solving mathematical problems in ways they have not before
- Making new friendships and restoring situations that may go wrong
- Becoming a scientist and researching the world for new global findings
- Feeling safe and secure
We Need You!
At this point you probably already have experienced your conference with your child's classroom teacher or have it scheduled for later this month. This is a very important event that glues together our partnership with home and school. Please make this a priority this month and confirm your appointment with your teacher. Need to reschedule? Contact your teacher as soon as possible. Thank you to the families that have been flexible with early mornings and late evenings. We have received a lot of positive feedback and are glad they are going well. If you have a concern or still have questions after your time with your teacher, please contact your teacher so we can get you the information you need.
Our Goal
Each teacher is committed to meeting with 100% of families. We are working on tightening up our communication overall to make sure our families are aware of what is happening at Brooks School. Are you connected to us on Twitter? There is SO much information and highlights daily there that you don't want to miss! Follow us @BSEhseIN
As we head into a full week off we encourage you to do what we've encouraged our teachers to do. Enjoy time together as a family. Relax, read, rest and leave room for play. Take a break from the hustle and bustle we are used to. Let the To Do list go, put down your cell phone. Whether a walk outside or an hour at the park - get outside and be present with one another.
We will be ready to return and hit the ground running with a second Unit of Study in reading and writing. Our math and science notebooks will be filling up fast with 2nd quarter observations. We will be busy asking questions about our our community and world. We plan to work hard and be on the lookout for important events and showcases of all of our hard work before semester ends. We can't wait! Enjoy.
Fall Break & Calendars
Media Center News
Friday Library Reports
- Please read the message clearly with the Friday report you receive as a guardian. The report lists all of the books your child currently has checked out. Please look for the due date under each book title. Thank you.
Digital Citizenship
- Beginning this second quarter, I will be pushing into each classroom on a monthly basis for digital citizenship lessons. Lessons will include internet safety, privacy & security, communication, digital footprint, information literacy, creative credit & copyright, and cyberbullying.
BSE Broadcasts
- This year the BSE Broadcasts will again be student written and produced. However, this year I will be working with all grade levels to create a weekly broadcast highlighting student learning, engagement, and success at BSE. For now, we ask that you click on the links below to view, however, very soon, you will be able to access them through Canvas in the Media Center space. Stay tuned.

Read-A-Thon
Thank you again for the incredible support of the BSE Read-a-thon this year. As a school, we raised over $24,000 and students read 412,787 minutes! It has been exciting to watch the kids grow their love for reading and we truly appreciate all of your encouragement throughout this fundraiser. A few other interesting details include:
- 644 students set up a Read-a-Thon page
- 126 students sent invites via social media
- 376 students had at least one supporter
- students from preschool through fourth grade participated
Finally, the class winners are as follows:
For the Number of Minutes Read (with a prize of a surprise party!):
PK = Ganovsky; K = Renckly; 1 = Masters; 2 = Cespedes; 3 = Smith; 4 = Porzuczek
For Donations Collected (with a prize of Money to buy Books for the classroom)
PK = Ganovsky; K = Yaney; 1 = Gaudreau; 2 = Arndt; 3 = Siwik; 4 = Porzuczek
We would not have been able to do it without you. The prize selection window has closed and we expect to deliver prizes to our readers when we return from fall break.
Redistricting Survey
You may be aware that Hamilton Southeastern Schools is going through a redistricting process aimed at addressing a number of important matters, especially as the district continues to grow and shift population from the west to the east.
With the passage of a district-wide referendum in 2016, HSE Schools was able to hire additional teachers to reduce the pupil-to-teacher ratios in our schools. This change, however, necessitated the need to add portable classrooms to house these new teachers. To the greatest extent possible, redistricting will reduce the number of portables currently in use. This process is also necessary as we open a new school, Southeastern Elementary, on Cyntheanne Road next fall.
At this stage in the process, we need your help! Please consider taking a few minutes to complete an online survey. Your opinions and views will ensure that we develop the best redistricting plan for our students. The survey will close on November 2 at 8:00 a.m.
We also strongly encourage you to attend one of these public meetings on the redistricting process:
Wednesday, October 24
6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Fishers High School
CCA Cafeteria, enter Door #19
Thursday, October 25
6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Hamilton Southeastern High School
CCA Cafeteria, enter Door #18
If you have any questions about redistricting, we have uploaded several resources for you to view on hseschools.org. You will find a webpage dedicated to the HSE K-8 Redistricting Processunder the “Happenings” tab or by going to the “Quick Links” section. On this webpage, there are videos that give an in-depth explanation of the process and each redistricting scenario. Also included is a scenario packet to view and compare each one, and the MySchoolLocation tool, where you can enter your address and find your school assignments for each redistricting scenario.
Please keep in mind that regardless of where school boundary lines may ultimately be drawn, every student in HSE Schools will be attending a world-class school in terms of leadership, faculty, instructional resources, academic achievement and facilities.
We appreciate your time and help in this important process.
4th Grade Field Trip Parent Meeting
We will meet in the café at Brooks School. This meeting is not for students.
We will discuss locations to be visited, cost, and general information. Also, questions that you have will be addressed at that time. We look forward to seeing you. Thank you for your support!
