Hazeldale: Read Across America Week
School Newsletter — March 4th, 2020
Note from the Principal
Dear Hazeldale Families,
Read Across America week is a great week to celebrate READING! How much should your child be reading at home? As much as humanly possible!
The National Education Association has some great books on their website to consider reading. One of my personal favorite things about reading is that it exposes me to adventures and perspectives that I would never otherwise experience or understand. It's important to me that my daughters see me with a rich reading life in our home. One of the things I do with my girls, a 5th grader and a junior, is prior to long breaks stock up on some books to read. Especially before the two week winter break. My kids know that books are part of their gifts at Christmas time—which give them new material to read when we visit my family in Idaho. The breaks such as winter and spring breaks are dress rehearsals for the long summer break.
As we approach our spring conferences in April, and begin to think about summer, teachers and myself are often asked about summer school. My first question for you to think about is how much is your child reading in the hours outside of school? This is the most critical important thing that will absolutely make a difference in your child's academic success. Reading is the most critical skill to your child's future success—All of school is going to be easier for your kids if your kids become powerful readers . . . Your child can’t take AP Biology unless they can read the text; The Math state test is a reading test. You want to move heaven and earth to help your child become a great reader.
Remember, the achievement gap happens in the summer months as kids that read progress reading levels and kids that don't lose a reading level for every five weeks they aren't reading at a high volume—which increases that achievement gap. Use this celebration of reading week to begin practicing for our upcoming long summer break!
· Reading growth happens in the hours outside of school. Reading growth is 100% related to the volume of reading the kids do outside of school.
In this newsletter, below, I've attached and linked some resources to help you connect your child with high interest books.
Happy reading!!
