A Note from Mr. Bender
Dear Families,
We enjoyed celebrating the importance of reading during Read Across America Week. Thank you to the many students that read daily during the month of February and logged their reading minutes on the Reading Rewards log. Mrs. Alden will be reaching out to students that earned prizes.
The March Reading Rewards logs went home in today’s Friday Folder and are available on the Woodward Mill eCLASS page. Please set a goal to have your child read for at least 20 minutes per day and log his/her minutes. Twenty minutes of reading is proven to increase academic success at school.
Remember, there is no school on Friday, March 12. Enjoy your day off!
Have a great weekend!
Mike Bender
Principal

You are an important partner with your child’s teacher, whether your child is learning at home or at school. To help you support your child’s learning, GCPS is launching a new initiative called AKS at Home. With this project, families will learn ways to help their child practice skills they are learning in class as part of the district’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Parents have access to a library of recorded sessions and tipsheets. Find more information on the AKS at Home web page. **NEW DATES FOR SECOND SEMESTER HAVE BEEN ADDED!**
Your counselors are available for individual sessions with digital students during office hours or by appointment. Check out our eClass page to speak with us and for other resources!
Character Word of the Month: Cooperation
The character trait for the month of March is Cooperation. We define cooperation as working together to get something done. Kids practice this when they are working together on a group project, reading a book, or completing an assignment together. Teachers will choose one student in their class that exhibited cooperation the most for the month of March to represent their class as the Cub of the Month.
Women's History Month
Check out read-aloud books by your counselors on our eCLASS page for Women’s History Month in March! Look under “Content” to find books featuring incredible women in history!
Reading Rewards
The goal of our Reading Rewards program is to help students develop a consistent habit of reading. The monthly requirement is to read, outside of school hours, at least 20 minutes a day for at least 20 days of the month. Students are expected to list book titles and minutes read on each of the 20 dates that are logged on the form. Parents must initial each of the entry dates.
For students to be recognized, the reading log must be turned in on time and considered complete. Students can complete and submit a paper or digital log. The digital log can be found on the school home page of eCLASS. The digital log is an editable pdf file that can be downloaded and saved to your computer at home. Once complete the digital log is submitted as an eCLASS assignment.
March Reading Reward Logs were sent home this week. Reading logs can be turned into your teacher anytime you have finished the requirements! No logs should be received before the 21st of each month.
If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, please email Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.
Georgia Picture Book Nominee Spotlight: "The Proudest Blue"
The Proudest Blue
Written by Ibtihaj Muhammad and illustrated by S.K. Ali and Hatem Aly
With her new backpack and light-up shoes, Faizah knows the first day of school is going to be special. It's the start of a brand new year and, best of all, it's her older sister Asiya's first day of hijab--a hijab of beautiful blue fabric, like the ocean waving to the sky. But not everyone sees hijab as beautiful, and in the face of hurtful, confusing words, Faizah will find new ways to be strong.
