Expectations/Policies
EXPECTATIONS (or..DRAMA RULES!)
- Decide to try. Make a choice and take a risk.
- Respect each other. Ideas, feelings, boundaries, and turns.
- Act with the 3 Cs. Concentration, commitment, creativity.
- Move safely. Control your body.
- Applaud each other. Show audience etiquette.
The BRAVE Code and the KISD Code of Conduct are to be followed at all times.
POLICIES
- Grading: 60% Participation/Daily; 40% Tests/Performances
- Theatre Isn’t Fair: I promise to treat you and grade you fairly in class, but not everyone will get the leading role in every scene or play.
- Behavior: Failure to comply with expectations may result in the following:
Reminder: A verbal reminder of my expectations.
Removal: Physical removal from our activity to watch and learn expectations.
Rejoin: Rejoining the group with a reminder of desirable behavior.
Review: Short private chat with the student to ask questions and clarify expectations.
Reach out: If your student and I are unable to solve problems together, I may reach out to parents, guardians, or other teachers for guidance and support.
Our First Week
Both fifth and sixth grade classes learned about my policies and expectations for the first week. We engaged in team building activities as well as name games, and each class was "sorted" into a Harry Potter themed house, for which they can earn points to then earn rewards! (Did I mention I love Harry Potter?)
My favorite project was the paper chains. Groups of 5-6 were given a single sheet of construction paper, glue, and scissors. They attempted to make the longest paper chain possible using only those materials. The longest one ended up being over 15 feet long!
We discussed that a chain can only serve its purpose if each link does its job. Just like in my theatre classroom, each individual must do his or her best and respect the other "links" or our class cannot perform its function. As Albus Dumbledore said, "We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided."
I have hung the chains in the entrance to the lair, to remind us all that our actions matter, we are important, and who we choose to be affects everyone.
See photos below of our work!
Week 2
- Emergency protocols
- Ways to get involved in BRAVE Theatre
- What to expect from the year.
We also played a game that had focus & concentration elements, as well as dramatic acting moments.
Later this week, 5th grade will start storytelling and skits, and 6th grade will begin their improvisation unit.
Ask your student:
In Mrs. Lentz's classroom, what do you do for a fire drill?
Why did we play the walkabout game?
What are you most excited for in drama?
After School Opportunities
- There will be 3 after-school, 6th Grade productions this year.
- They are audition-based.
- I cover all the TEKS-mandated curriculum in my class. Therefore, everything we do after school is considered a bonus.
- I will not be able to cast every student who auditions.
- Details about each production and audition requirements will come soon!
Tribes (Clubs)
Sign-ups and details for Tribes will come later this fall. I will keep you posted!
- Popcorn Tribe: A film club in which we watch and discuss classic movies.
- Huzzah Tribe: 5th Grade Drama Club. It changes every year!
BCI in the House
- This is a social activity designed to encourage our students to participate in their community. Keller ISD has an incredible theatre program from elementary to high school, and I want our students benefit from more than just BCI's performances. I will choose certain performances from schools around the district, invite you and your students, and hopefully we can attend some as a group!
- All 5th and 6th graders are welcome.
- Look for dates soon!
