World Languages - German 2
Frau Abate’s German 2 classes have been watching a German reality TV/documentary show in the second semester, in order to train their listening skills.
The show is about 16 teenagers from Berlin - half are German kids and half are refugee kids from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. They are being matched up in order to teach each other about their respective cultures and what their lives are/were like. The show documents their developing friendship and how they progress through a task they have to fulfill by the end of the season.
The class has finished Season 1 and has grown quite fond of the participants. We recently started Season 2 with a new group of teenagers and have 3 more episodes to go to finish up this season.
Since the students enjoyed this part of German class very much, Frau Abate contacted the television station in Berlin and was subsequently put in touch with the producer of the show. She informed the producer that she used the series as a learning tool in her German class, and inquired whether it might be possible to be put in contact with the show’s participants and ultimately have a Skype conference.
To her surprise, the producer was very enthusiastic about the idea and collaborated with Frau Abate to make this a reality! On April 20th, both German 2 classes met with the teenagers from Germany on Skype, and Room 307 was bustling with excitement.
The students had prepared questions which they asked the Berlin youth in German, practicing their German speaking skills. They found out lots of things about each other, and were thrilled to see their favorite group members on the screen. Several of the CVHS German students made friends with the show’s participants and are now in contact with them via different social media sites. Hopefully, these friendships will continue and will enrich their lives.
Frau Abate is very pleased that she was able to make this all possible for her classes. Sadly, due to low numbers of registrations, the German program will not continue in the new school year, but Frau Abate has enjoyed teaching at Campo tremendously this year and will miss her students.

Summer School Registration Information
Gilbert Public Schools Community,
For the 2018 GPS Secondary Summer School Session we will be changing the registration procedures.
In previous years, registration was done through Community Education and their online system. This year we are moving registration to work within Infinite Campus, using InTouch. Moving to Infinite Campus has allowed us to work with the school counselors to create a system in which Summer School recommendations come directly from your child’s counselor.
This year, in order to register for a summer school course, a request will need to be placed with your child’s counselor. That counselor will then suggest the course in Infinite Campus.
Parents will receive an email that the course has been suggested and that they can then find it under the Highland High School (location of 2018 summer school) tab in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to pay for it. Once payment is received, the student will be registered for the course and a confirmation email will be sent.
For more information please visit our webpage: Summer School Information
If you have any questions about the Secondary Summer School process please email us: summerschool@gilbertschools.net
If you have any questions on what class is best to take for your child this summer, please contact your child’s school counselor.

2nd Annual Solo & Ensemble Recital
The Campo Verde Bands Program held its 2nd Annual Solo & Ensemble Recital on Tuesday Evening, April 17th. There were some fabulous performances that evening. This recital gives students the opportunity to perform alone or in small groups where their true musical talents can shine. Some students had to step outside their comfort zone as they are used to playing with very large ensembles. Performers included Amber Miller, Kaytlin King, Grace Nolan, Dallin Wise, Dalton Woodruff, Darby Woolslayer, Amanda Teppo, Ethan Cantor, Abbie Hendrix, Riley Smelkinson, Jaden Dupree, Max Bustamante, Connor Geroux, Jackson Davis, Nolan Morse, Daniel Jerdon, Jake Harker, Logan Lamothe, and Chandler Romney.
Congrats to all the musicians – you did an amazing job!
