RSI Golden Hawk Community,

Welcome all to the virtual kick off of the 2020-2021 school year. The RSI staff has had a tremendously successful week of staff development, planning, and collaborating in preparation for our Thursday, August 6th official start of school. Our staff is eager to begin meeting with students tomorrow to frame up new relationships, set the tone for a positive year and begin to highlight the process and procedures for learning. The next two days of school are very much like our normal start of school where we spend quality time focused on getting to know our students and letting them get to know how school will work. At this point you should have all had a contact from at least your block one teacher, but in most cases both teachers. Thanks for helping your students prepare to meet their teachers tomorrow by having their technology charged and ready. Log in help and Canvas support are located in this newsletter for those who may need assistance. It is my absolute pleasure to initiate the start of school and I can't wait to see our RSI Hawks fully engaged in their daily learning. I, like many of you, also can't wait for the day in the future when we get to return all students to their classrooms right here at the River. Thanks for your continued patience, flexibility and compassion towards everyone who's working so hard to ensure a positive school year for all!

RSI Virtual Timeline

August 6th and 7th: Teachers will zoom with individual students and possibly full class for general greetings, welcoming and general start up.

August 10th: Virtual school schedules are initiated and school begins. You will receive the virtual schedule specific to your child/children in your teacher correspondence.

August 10th: 6th Grade Band and Orchestra only - Zoom introductory meeting at 2:30pm. Links to this Zoom meeting will be posted in the Announcements section in the Canvas Course for the class. No instrument or materials are needed for this meeting. Band and Orchestra students will be scheduled for a rotation virtually. The specific schedule will come after the general ALL zoom. Playing will commence after Labor Day. IT’S NOT TOO LATE. For parents and 6th grade students still considering joining band or orchestra, you can still investigate the different instruments, make a selection and join! As you review this timeline remember that your teachers will be communicating all of the details of their virtual plans with you via their canvas page and email. Social Emotional Learning and Equity at RSI

Welcome back Golden Hawk families! In this newsletter, we will be regularly highlighting Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and equity work that is occurring at RSI. Our administration and staff have been engaging in a great deal of equity and anti-racism work for many years. We are committed to being transparent in sharing our efforts with you this year. Riverside Intermediate has two equity coaches who lead an equity team with 20+ staff members. This team meets regularly to examine and discuss policies, procedures, curriculum and much more. We provide professional development to our entire staff that pertains to equity and inclusion. Our school is committed to being a place where all students and families feel safe to be their authentic selves. We know that there is power in the partnership between families, students, teachers, and staff, so please reach out if you ever have questions, concerns, or suggestions. We are committed to equity work and to the humanity of every single child who walks through the doors of RSI.

Using Skyward

You should have already received your login and password for Skyward. If you haven’t, simply click FORGOT LOGIN/PASSWORD. Skyward allows parents to access grades, report cards, bus information, immunization records, lunch account/food service information, student fees, schedules, and the BACK TO SCHOOL FORMS 2020-2021. All students are required to have an iPad to expand our HSE21 curriculum. Families have the choice of purchasing an iPad on their own or they may choose to rent the iPad through the school. The following instructions are how to create and pair accounts in Canvas. Your HSE students will be using Canvas throughout virtual and in-person instructions. If you have a child or children that are new to the district, please use the following instructions to link your child's Canvas account to your parent account. Please note that if you have already created a Parent Canvas account and linked your child(ren)'s account(s), you will not need to do this.

You will need your child's school email address and ID#. This information can be found in Skyward. Please click here to access Skyward. If the link is not working, you can go to the HSE homepage and click on the Canvas tab located at the top right of the screen.

Once you are logged in, you will select your child's name from the drop down menu under Family Access at the top of the page. Next, you will click on the Student Info tab from the column on the left. Your child's school email can be found next to the word School in the middle of the screen (just to the right of their school picture) and their school ID # is located under their picture (their school ID # is labeled as Other ID).


  1. Please click here to access Canvas. If the link is not working, you can go to the HSE homepage and click on the Canvas tab located at the top right of the screen. You will click on the Students/Staff Portal rectangle to login with your child's information, using your child's full school email address as the username. Enter "hse" in front of their 6 digit other ID number for the password. You will now be logged in under their name.
  2. While on their Canvas page, click on Account and then Settings. Look to the right and click Pair with Observer. You will need to write down the code so you can use it to link your accounts.
  3. Click Account and Logout. You are now logged out of your child's account.
  4. If you have multiple students in the district, you will need to complete steps 1-3 for each of your children. You will need a pairing code for each student in an HSE school.
  5. Once you have a pairing code for each of your children, you will click here to access the home page of Canvas. If the link is not working, you can go to the HSE homepage and click on the Canvas tab located at the top right of the screen. You will click on the Parent Canvas Portal rectangle to create your profile. You will need your name, email, create a password, and one student pairing code. Click on Start Participating.
  6. Check your email now to finalize your Canvas sign-up.
  7. To add other children, go back to the HSE homepage, click Canvas tab, click Parent Portal, and login. Click on Account, click on Observing, and add your next child's pairing code.


Attendance Note

Please report all absences during virtual learning to the office. This includes any illnesses, family emergencies or appointments that may keep your student from participating in their virtual instruction.

When reporting an absence on our voicemail, we ask that you state your student's first and last name, teacher's name and a brief reason for the absence. Even if you email the teacher, you MUST report the absence to the office!

HSE Report it!

As you know, Hamilton Southeastern Schools has benefitted over the years from a “Text-a-Tip” service to provide anonymous information to the district. We wanted to let you know that we have launched “HSE Report It!”, a new school safety mobile reporting app that allows students, staff and community members to provide anonymous information about concerns for their own safety or the safety of others. HSE Report It! replaces Text-A-Tip product, which is going out of service.

We believe that HSE Report it!, which can be downloaded via Google Play or the Apple App Store, provides enhanced reporting capabilities. It’s anonymous and reports are made exclusively through the mobile app. Plus, unlike SMS text reports, HSE Report it! will have no length limitations or the need to remember a short code. Reporters can attach photos, screenshots, videos, documents and/or audio recordings to their concerns and they can engage in a two-way dialogue with a real person.

Reports are monitored by HSE building and district administration and the school resource officers (SROs).

The new HSE Report It! app will be an important resource for our community to submit anonymous tips when they wish to report concerns for their safety and the safety of others. Please encourage your family to download the app and be aware that this resource is now available to use when needed.
