Panther Press

October 4th - October 8th

Good evening Panther Nation,

SMS held its first pink out of October today and it was great to see so many students and staff supporting this effort. As I am sure many of you are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. SMS will continue to hold pink outs every Friday in October so we look forward to more pink to come! I would like to take this opportunity to recognize three very special, strong, breast cancer survivors here at SMS. Beverly Burke, Kristin Felts, and Deann Fuller are inspirations to us all. We love you and are humbled to work with such amazing women.

It is hard to believe but next week will mark the halfway point of our first quarter. With the 4.5 week mark, interims come out. This year, we will embrace one of the positive aspects of the digitization that has accelerated as a result of Covid-19 and save a few trees while we are at it. Instead of issuing paper interims, we will encourage parents to go onto ParentPortal and check student grades there. That being said, if you would like a paper copy for any reason, feel free to reach out to your child's teachers. Also, any student who has a D or F in a class will be contacted by that teacher so that we can work together to develop a plan to better support your child.

Finally, please be sure you are submitting notes to our front office for absences. Tracey Harmon is working hard to make sure that we are following all of the proper protocols when it comes to attendance. Submitting notes to her in a timely manner will make this process run more smoothly. Hand written notes are ok but so are emails. Her email is THarmon@iwcs.k12.va.us.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Your proud principal,

Todd Christiansen

Wall of Distinction

This year, we are doing something a little different with the Wall of Distinction that is located in the front office. Each month, we will be recognizing individuals who have had a positive impact on the community. One Team, One Dream is our motto this year and we feel like embracing the community of the school that we serve is an important step towards realizing our vision.

This week, we honored those who have who have been SMS staff members for ten years or more. The fact that these individuals have dedicated so much of their professional and personal lives to this building and community speaks volumes.

Please see the below picture for those who we recognized. From left to right we have Karl Robertson, Sherry Hatton, Bryan Gault, Barbara Haigh, Tracey Harmon, Melinda Shelton, Marsha Palmer, Beverly Burke, Angela Williams, Bill Constant, Pat Dillingham, and Donna Morrow. Those not in the picture but still recognized are Megan Andria, Greg Dockery, Kristin Felts, Deann Fuller and Yann Pirrone.

Congrats to you all and we look forward to recognizing more individuals who have a profound and positive impact on this community in the months to come!
