Success in Sixth Grade

Volume 8. Issue 2

Welcome Back!

"Intelligence plus character - that's the goal of true education." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

A Note From Mr. Nakano

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! Just a reminder that we will meet first in the MPR at 6:30, head to the classroom (room 21), and be done by 7:15, in time for the fourth quarter of the Patriots vs. Steelers game :).

Our mini presentation in the classroom will be delivered through Nearpod, an app that your children will be using, regardless if they bring their own device or not. If you would like to follow along and participate, to experience how they interact with a lesson, click on the Nearpod hyperlink in the first sentence or search "Nearpod" in your app store to download.

Back to School Night / BYOD Presentation

Thursday, Sep. 10th, 6:30pm

12025 Yale Court

Irvine, CA

Sorry, but it is right in the middle of the first NFL game of the season.

Our Back to School Night presentation will have a different feel this year. The "traditional" presentation is available to view below; an example of flipped learning, which will be explained more later.

This gives us the opportunity to present and introduce to you our new BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program.

We will start by meeting in the MPR and then we will dismiss to our individual classrooms the last few minutes to go over some quick nuts and bolts. Looking forward to seeing you!

Welcome to Back to School Night 2015!
Flipping the Classroom: Explained

Growth Mindset

Our focus this week on the growth mindset is to treat our brain like a muscle. It is through practice and hard work that concepts become easy to pick up; like a bowling ball is to a bodybuilder.

Unit 1: Number Concepts

"SELFIE" stands for:

Showed all of my work

Explained my answers

Lots of math vocabulary used

Found multiple solutions

I persevered through the problem

Eliminated careless errors

Before turning in our work, we're going through the "SELFIE" process to ensure our best work is submitted.

To start off, we are reviewing the most common errors from our initial basic skills assessment, starting with division and decimals.
