Meet Ryan Rewey, CTE Director and Ashley Hart, New Everfi Representative
Meet Ryan Rewey, CTE Director for Applied Technologies
Ryan Rewey is our new CTE Director for Applied Technology and Workforce Development. Ryan previously worked in Beloit, WI as a Director of Career and Technical Education.
Ryan grew up in Lancaster WI, a small community in the southwest corner of the State. After high school Ryan worked for one year in a variety of capacities ranging from landscaping, masonry and residential construction. He enrolled into a construction and remodeling program at Madison Area Technical College and received a technical diploma. Upon completion he continued his education at the University of Wisconsin Stout completing a Bachelors of Science degree in Technology Education.
Ryan taught a variety of classes ranging from communication systems, welding, construction, electronics and small engines for 12 years in Albany and Janesville WI. During this time he completed Master’s degrees in Interdisciplinary Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership. He also completed his CTE Coordinator certification in Beloit, WI where he was the Director of CTE for 3 years. During his time in Beloit he was able to help revitalize a program now called the REACH Advanced Career Education program. He also served as the general contractor for Beloit’s student house build and had the opportunity to speak at a variety of conferences for district administrators in WI. Ryan also testified at the State capital in Madison WI regarding Youth Workforce Readiness and had a chance to host a variety of government officials such as the Governor and State Superintendent of Schools.
Ryan is looking forward to working with staff to help continue the positive work already being done in Duval County. He is also hoping to help have an impact on CTE programming for students to better prepare them for life after high school in whatever path they may choose.

CTE Courses Perception vs. Reality
Career and Technical Education (CTE) for years has been defined as only for those students who may not want to pursue a 4-year degree. The reality today is that CTE benefits students who have an interest in all pathways. As educators, it is our job to prepare students for what life may look like after high school. We have a responsibility to help students make educated decisions regarding their futures. If a student wishes to enter the workforce, we can help them by allowing them to begin getting industry certifications while in high school. Such as those on the FLDOE CAPE Funding List. If students wish to continue their path into a post-secondary institution they may have the opportunity to be in dual enrollment courses that allow them to get post-secondary credit while still in high school.
The perception of CTE today must be shifted, courses today such as those in Science,Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Information Technology (IT) Computer Science, Biomedical, Manufacturing are just a few of the areas that represent educational opportunities through Career and Technical Education programming.
Much like the perception of CTE, today’s manufacturing industry also faces this same uphill battle. When people think of manufacturing they have an antiquated idea of what manufacturing use to look like. Today’s manufacturing facilities are highly technical and require skills that are in high demand. Such as those who operate Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment, these individuals must be able to understand not only aspects of manufacturing but also how to program and operate equipment to produce a product within a given set of parameters. This reality has manufacturing companies scrambling to find employees with skills that are required for 21st Century manufacturing facilities.
As the U.S. continues to address the skills gap Career and Technical Education must be at the forefront of the conversation. Below are some links that can help you learn more about the US Skills Gap.

Manufacturing Day – 2016
Florida Ranked #1 in the Nation
for 2015 MFG Day/Month – Let’s do it Again this Year!
Mark Your Calendar for 2016 MFG Day
Friday October 7, Manufacturing Day 2016, is a BIG day and is just around the corner! Do you have a plan? We at FLATE and FloridaMakes do as we are excited to be planning for another BIG year of student tours to manufacturing facilities all across Florida. Why do we do this? To answer this question, it might be time to step back and reflect on what the “hype” is all about. For us at FLATE, it’s not necessarily about having the highest numbers of “events” in a state (although we love that when it happens and it has happened for the past three years!).
It’s really all about providing our students with rich and meaningful career exploration experiences. Manufacturing Day has also been a great way to bring national attention to the industry in our state that directly supports nearly 400,000 Floridians with high wage, high skill jobs and careers. It also has been a great way to bring parents and communities across Florida together to learn about the manufacturing industry and its huge impact on our state’s economy. In 2016, FLATE is happy to partner with FloridaMakes who will be helping with our statewide MFGDAY-FL coordination.
