It was so fun to see so many grandparents visiting our classroom on Friday morning. I think we had about 55 people in the room, so it was lively and crowded! It was fun to see grandparents jumping right in to work on a math activity with their grandchildren! I did my best to greet everybody, but apologize if I inadvertently overlooked someone! Our students are lucky to have such caring, involved families!
BizTown interviews will be held on Tuesday morning this week! Students should be completing their job applications over the weekend (resumes are optional, not required!) We will be working on interview skills on Monday (practicing handshakes, looking people in the eye, avoiding "um" and "like," and giving good reasons why they'd be a good person for the jobs they want.) I will upload a copy of the interview form onto Google Classroom tomorrow so your students can log on at home on Monday evening to view/print the form in case they'd like to do a mock interview with you. Students should dress "professionally" for their interview, but PLEASE do not go out and buy anything! I have suggested that, if possible, students should wear something they already have at home that looks a bit more professional than a t-shirt and track shorts. Collared shirts (short sleeves are fine) and pants or nice shorts would be perfect for boys or girls. Some girls have asked if they could wear heels. I told them that if they had dress shoes with very small heels, they could wear it for the interview, but they would need a pair of flat shoes/sneakers to change into afterwards. Please do not send your child to school in "high heels." It is important that our students are safe and, given how uneven some of the pavement is outside during construction, heels would not be a safe choice. For our actual visit to JA BizTown, students should dress professionally (same outfit as interview would be perfect), and should be sure to wear comfortable shoes! They will be on their feet all day!
School pictures are on Wednesday. I do not know exactly what time our pictures will be, but we do not have P.E. or any other pull-out that day that might interfere with pictures. An order form was sent home in last week's Dolphin Envelopes. I will send a reminder slip home on Monday or Tuesday as well.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help out with our BizTown visit on the 25th. I pulled 7 names from a bowl and have notified those people that they were selected as our volunteers for that day. Please check your email in the next day or so. I will be sending each of you a link you will need to use to register yourself as a volunteer with JA BizTown. If your plans have changed and you are not able to attend that day, please let me know as soon as possible so I can offer the space to another parent who wanted to go. If your name was not chosen this time, please submit your name for our other field trips this year. We will be going to Julian for a fun, hands-on experience with colonial life, and to the San Diego Symphony for a fantastic young people's concert. We will also have our 5th grade pool party at the end of the year, and any parents who wish to attend may join us that day.

We are continuing our BizTown curriculum. After their interviews on Tuesday, your students will receive their job offers on Wednesday. They will begin meeting with their companies to organize and plan their businesses. They will be completing paperwork to receive a bank loan, develop advertising (television, radio, and newspaper). They will be setting prices for the goods and services they provide, as well as determining what they need to do individually and as a team to be a "quality" business.
In addition, this Friday will be our second States & Capitals quiz. Your student knows which region they should be studying for. All students have received maps and study guides (in their binders), as well as a bright green tracking sheet, to help them prepare for their quizzes. As a reminder, at any time that your child feels ready, he/she may choose to take the "All 50" test. Students may have 3 tries to take that test during 5th grade. Once a student has passed the "All 50" test, he/she has met the goal and will be recognized at Promotion. Students may also choose to try for 100% spelling (3 tries for that as well), which is an optional, additional challenge.
