Technology
Happy Sunday Staff! This week's newsletter brings you some more super cool information (http://bit.ly/stafftechnews20 ):
Have you heard of David Byrne from The Talking Heads? He has created a new website that might be useful in your classes: Reasons to be Cheerful. Reasons to be Cheerful embodies this sensibility, applying it now to the future of our world. Through stories of hope, rooted in evidence, Reasons to be Cheerful aims to inspire us all to be curious about how the world can be better, and to ask ourselves how we can be part of that change. It tells stories that reveal that there are, in fact, a surprising number of reasons to feel cheerful. Many of these reasons come in the form of smart, proven, replicable solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. We’re here to tell you about some of them. Through sharp reporting, our stories balance a sense of healthy optimism with journalistic rigor, and find cause for hope. We are part magazine, part therapy session, part blueprint for a better world. (A similar website is Wonderopolis: Where the Wonders of Learning Never Cease)

Speech and Debate
Westview is hosting a speech/debate tournament Saturday, Oct 19th...but wait, it's even open to kids not on the team! Those outspoken students who could use an outlet. Please help me spread the word.
We're offering a philosophical event called Big Question Debate (BQD). The topic is: "Objective Morality Exists". Please share with your students or with "that" kid who has that special something but no outlet for expression. Here's the talking points:
1) 100% FREE
2) NO experience required!
3) Our team will do one-on-one training, and
4) No commitment required to "join" the team (of course, they're always welcome though. The "I've been curious but don't see myself as a debater" kids will see they really CAN do this. Also, a great way to reach our under-represented populations!)
Curious kids should come by my room (S113) anytime to learn more. They can also email me with questions.
Speak Up 4 Student Success
The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427) in Spring 2019. This is a historic and much-needed investment in K-12 schools. The Beaverton School District could be able to access an estimated $34 million per year through a state application process.
School districts are required to apply for funds and must engage their community in a needs assessment process prior to the application for funds. We will host a series of Community Conversations - Speak Up 4 Student Success in several locations throughout the BSD. Schools will also be engaging their communities in these conversations during September and October.
Please join us to talk about what student success looks like in the Beaverton School District? What is going well in Beaverton schools? What areas/services/programs could we improve?
Your voice matters! We welcome your perspective and opinion.
Speak Up 4 Student Success Community Conversations offered in English & Spanish:
For more information, and to complete a Needs Assessment Survey, please visit the Student Success Act webpage.
