Leadership Team message from Marg
Tēnā koutou katoa,
Spring has finally sprung and we have finally had a run of sunny days at school this week. Long may it last. Thank you to everyone for supporting our parent teacher conferences over Zoom. We look forward to a time when we can all meet face to face, and to a time where wellness abounds in school amongst students, whānau and staff.
If there are any follow up questions from your parent teacher conferences please contact your child’s teacher.
Traffic lights on Sandringham Road
We have a staff member on the Kea Crossing on Shorwell Street every day as this is not a managed crossing (no lights).
The crossing on Sandringham Road is managed with lights and is not staffed. We do have a Travelwise programme where students and staff and a team from Auckland Transport do various activities to bring awareness to the public about safety outside the school gates.
Sadly our biggest safety issue is Edendale whānau stopping on the yellow lines outside school to do their drop off and pick up.
We have had a parent communicate with us about the possibility of volunteering to take on a 20 minute commitment before school and/or a 10-15 minute commitment after school to provide a parent on the managed Sandringham Road crossing. If this were to happen it would need to be a five day per week commitment so a few volunteers would be needed. If you would like to be involved, please let the office staff know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org Please let us know if this is something you could help us with and we will help support with training.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - Māori language week
He reo tupu, he reo ora: A growing language is a living language
Every year since 1975, New Zealand has marked Māori Language Week. This is a time for all New Zealanders to celebrate te reo Māori (the Māori language) and to use more Māori phrases in everyday life. At Edendale, we are going to celebrate te reo Māori week in week 8 - Monday, September 12 - Friday, 16. This special week is an opportunity for the concentrated celebration and promotion of te reo Māori. Our ākonga will get to explore the language through fun and exciting activities designed by our kaiako.
Edendale Reo-athon 2022
After a huge success with our Mathathon in 2020 and Spellathon in 2021, this year, we have organised ‘Edendale Reo-athon’, our school-wide fundraiser for 2022. The money raised from this event will support our exceptional music, visual arts, Garden to Table, and STEAM programmes, as well as the enhancement of our school environment. More information and timeline to come soon.
On Tuesday the 23rd of August 2022, students from Tuakana took a trip to the Auckland Writer’s festival at Aotea Centre. We heard 4 different authors talk about their writing and inspiration for the stories they have told many children. This was an exciting event that we were lucky enough to attend to learn about the writing process and to keep pursuing our writing because one day we may have a published book. Some students have written a piece about their experiences.
I really enjoyed listening to Tom E. Moffat. He was very, very good at joking. Tom writes joke books like I’m joking, You`re joking, Barking mad and a lot more. It was very fun hearing his jokes.

My favourite author, there was Tom E Moffet because he was really funny and made me laugh. I really liked Tom E Moffet's books and the jokes that he made by himself. My second favourite author was Tui T Sutherland because I think that the books that she made look really interesting. My favourite book by Tui T Sutherland is Wings Of Fire because I really liked the characters and the descriptive words that she uses. I also really enjoyed the writer's festival because we got to ask questions and we even got a free book at the end!

The writer's festival was super fun.
We got to meet a lot of writers and learn about their backgrounds. We even got some tips about writing. They also gave us some inspiring advice like following your dreams, keeping going, and don't give up. My favourite writer was Tom E. Moffatt. He was super funny and made me laugh just by saying a word. The reason why he was my favourite writer is that I love comedy and love jokes. But all the writers were super amazing, I had the best time there.
