Displaying Our Skills in the Community
There is a flurry of activity going on in the art room and beyond this February! Artwork is on display at not only Glendale City Hall, but at a new venue for the month of February! I am pleased to announce that artwork from my art class and Ms. Clark's S.T.E.A.M. class will be displayed at the North Shore Library for the month of February and part of March. We will have lots of amazing 2-D and 3-D artwork up for display at the library. If you're there, be on the lookout for it!Clay, clay and More Clay!!!
6th, 7th and 8th grade students are just starting their clay projects to wrap up the trimester. 6th grade students are learning about hand building methods including pinch pot with score, slip and smear techniques. 7th grade students are making functional hand built containers using the slab method. We use templates to find the radius, diameter, circumference, height and width of what we want in our containers based on our creative visions. 8th grade has been waiting for it...a big favorite...the pottery wheel! We have 4 electric wheels and 3 kick wheels. Student learn how to center, drop the hole and build on the sides of their piece based on their creative vision.
The 8th grade Mural
The 8th grade mural project is underway in the art room. Information went out to families of 8th grade students in December via Infinite Campus regarding the mural. We currently have sign up times for Resource period during the day and an after school time slot for one day a week. 8th grade students use a Google Classroom Mural Sign up form to sign up for work times to participate. This tradition has been going on since the early 1980's and reflects each 8th grade class and each individual that participates. I will send updates regarding progress along the way!
Tech. Ed.
S.T.E.A.M.
We began the new school year with coding and programming using Lego Spike Kits and others used Blockly with Dash & Dot Bots to navigate challenges. Trimester 2 students also are completing the Wisconsin Ecosystem Project Murals using the technical drawings from trimester 1 students and their own technical drawings of species native to Wisconsin. These murals will be showcased at our very own North Shore Library for the month of February and part of March - stop in to view their collections. This week, STEAM students have begun work around designing habitat pockets, student learning spaces, and food gardens and orchards. We are excited to plan out the spaces and even begin growing seedlings for the spring. Overall, STEAM students have the opportunity to identify real world challenges/projects and work collaboratively to create solutions using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.
Frequently Asked Questions from Families and Students
A: This year's theme is "Our Story." The theme ideas are submitted to Mrs. Malcolm by Google Form. The themes that tie into the 8th grade completion idea are then put up for a Google Form vote. The theme with the most votes wins.
Student Question: What Allied Arts class do I have last?
A: Your last Allied Arts rotation class will occur on Monday, March 6th. You have Art, Tech. Ed. and S.T.E.A.M. so whatever class you have not had you will be the class you will go to. Allied Arts classes are always opposite of your Physical Education class (they are year long). If you have A day Physical Education, your B day will be your Allied Arts class. This is also reflected on your Infinite Campus schedule.
What's Coming Up?
Tech. Ed.: The 6th and 7th grades will begin our computer Sketchup unit by designing a model home and building their perfect neighborhood. In 8th grade, we are finishing up another successful cardboard boat unit and should set sail in the pool in the next two weeks. We have some outstanding designs that should see great success.
S.T.E.A.M.: We will be moving into working on outdoor projects.
