Going Unnoticed.
I think when we have a building with over 550 students moving about it's easy to sometimes miss out on someone or pass them by without notice. However, we need to stop, take notice, recognize them as individuals with needs. Their needs are different, because each and everyone one of our kids are coming in every day with their own experiences. They may be facing depression, anxiety, abuse, financial constraints, or they may be having the time of their lives. Regardless, we need to take notice. This week, I sat with a child who was swearing and slamming doors, but I stayed calm and observed him and listened. Swearing, slamming doors, and walking away really meant, "I need a break." "God your so annoying. I hate school. It sucks and it's so boring," really stood for, "School is hard and I'm struggling. I need help." I wouldn't have noticed these messages had I strongly reacted to his method of communication, but what was important to me in that moment was his message.
I am challenging you to take notice and try to see each of your kids in a different light this week. Try to find out something new about each of your students. Try on a different perspective, especially for the student(s) who may be pushing your buttons. Look past their hurt, anger, or annoying behavior. Look past their method and try to REALLY hear their message.
Majors! What To Do
What is a Major?
Majors are moments in which students are:
- Causing a major disruption in the classroom (learning has been derailed)
- Causing physical harm
- Swearing at an individual
- Bullying
- Threatening others
What We Need From You & Why:
- Call the office and request that an administrator come to your room in the moment. There may be a circumstance when an administrator is not available, in that situation Officer Krock will come or we will have the student sent down to Jenny's room until an administrator is available. Why? It is important for admin to know immediately when incidents like these take place in order to have give students timely feedback. If teachers only submit an Educlimber, we get notified via email and that prevents working with the student in the moment.
- If you cannot talk to the administrator in the moment when we come to get the child, please send us an email shortly there after to let us know what happened. Why? We understand sometimes you are frustrated and are not ready to talk about the incident or you need to get back to your class. However, we want your feedback when we start to work with the student, in order to have the whole picture.
- Enter the behavior incident into Educlimber before the end of the day. Why? Entering the behavior is the last step when entering majors into Educlimber, this is an important step that allows us to track student behavior and look for trends. This can help in the problem-solving mode.
