Player News!

Hello Families,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and had a restful time at home during the break. We are slowly getting back into the routine of school, but glad to be back! It is cold but the children don't seem to mind. They all look happy to be back as well.

Please let me remind all of you to log into your child's Google Classroom. The teachers have set up the classrooms for any student who is at home either because of isolation or for those who have chosen to stay home for a bit for precautionary measures. We are also keeping our Google Classrooms up to date and ready in the event that we do have to isolate a full classroom due to exposure. We certainly hope that doesn't happen but we must be prepared in case it does.

If you do not have any device that your child can use at home, please call the office so we can try to issue you a chromebook to use while your child is home. We are limited on how many we have to distribute, but we will do our best to get one to anyone who needs it.

The first few weeks of January are usually too cold to go outdoors, but if the temperature rises somewhat, we will still go outside even for a short time. The fresh air and exercise is good for all of us. Please make sure that your child has a hat and gloves, along with a winter coat. Also, if you have not already done so, please make sure that the change of clothing we have in the classroom is appropriate for this weather.

Big picture

Getting to Know You

If your child has recently enrolled in Player School or if you haven't already done so, please take a moment to fill out the form below to provide us with a little more information about your child. It will also ask about other adults who are allowed to pick up your child. We will not dismiss your child to anyone who you have not indicated as an alternative pick up person besides a parent. You will also have an opportunity to submit any questions you might need to know prior to our orientation days.

Note: If you already filled this out from the previous time I sent it out or from our website, you will not need to do it again.

Covid Updates

I know there are a lot of concerns about the rising numbers of Covid cases throughout the area and the school district. We continue to do all that we can to keep children and staff safe. The protocol for any person with symptoms has remained stringent. Should anyone in the building shows symptoms, they must be sent home and asked to isolate themselves and/or take a Covid test. Although the CDC has recommended that individuals with Covid isolate for only 5 days now, the Illinois State Board of Education has not yet adopted this plan. We are continuing to have individuals isolate for a 10 day period if they test positive. If someone is symptomatic and chooses not to test, then they must isolate for 14 days before returning to school. We have found that this process has continued to keep others safe and there have been minimal cases here at Player School. If the Illinois State Board of Education adopts the current CDC recommendations, we will let families know at that time. As has been the case, these recommendations and guidelines have been continually changing.

Parent Corner

Today's message in the parenting corner is to make you aware to watch your child for signs of stress. We are all experiencing high levels of stress usually related to worrying about Covid, worrying about resources, worrying about work, worrying about our children or parents, etc. When we have high levels of stress, often times, our children do too. It's important to recognize this and try to practice strategies to lower your own level of stress. Practice breathing techniques, yoga stretches, or meditation. Most of our students are very familiar with breathing techniques and yoga as it it something we practice with them to help when calming is necessary. There are many child-centered strategies that you can research on your own or reach out to us for. We would be happy to send you some ideas or loan you a book from our parent library.

If any of you have parenting concerns, issues with your child, or questions on how to handle situations at home, please reach out to us. We can arrange for you to meet with our team who can support you with suggestions and ideas. Please email our Parent Coordinator, Sue Penway at spenway@isd109.org.

A flyer will be sent home later this month to invite you to attend a Parent Book Club. This will be an evening event where a group meets once a week for 5 consecutive weeks as they explore a topic of child development. Please watch for this invitation if this interests you.

Help Wanted

School District 109 is still looking to hire paraprofessionals and substitutes. If you have at least 60 hours of college credit, you can apply for a paraprofessional license. If you have a bachelor's degree, you can apply for a teacher substitute license. If you are interested in hearing more about either of these positions, feel free to reach out to me. I can guide you to how to obtain a license or answer any of your questions.
