Digital Citizenship NEEDS to be Taught All Year Long
Now that Digital Citizenship Week has come and gone, we need to continue the conversation with our students and teachers. We all know digital citizens aren't born—they're taught by you! To help you continue the conversation. Here are some tips and tricks to keep the conversation going all year long! As an educator in the 21st Century, you should;
- Incorporate digital citizenship lessons into daily studies. For example, after teaching on a particular topic in history, offer your students important links to credible sites where they can learn more about the topic...
- Educate yourself. Many educators feel like they don’t know enough about digital citizenship themselves to be able to effectively teach it...
- Be a role model. Implement the very things you teach about digital citizenship so your students can emulate you.
- Create a digital toolkit of “Dos and Don'ts” that you keep in sight of your students at all times in order to ingrain the rules of digital ethics in them.
- Engage with your students in debates and discussions regularly about real digital citizenship cases and issues to encourage them to explore and formulate their own opinions on the matter.
Use the materials to help students think critically about what they see online, understand the benefits and risks of sharing information, and balance screen time with other activities.
If you have any GREAT lesson plans that you would be willing to share with your ADW teaching community, please consider submitting them here.
Together, we're raising a generation of happy, healthy digital citizens. #ADWFamily

In a traditional model of teaching, the teacher is the source of knowledge. Learning is based on one-dimensional materials that are directly connected to curriculum content and skills. Today’s resources however, are digital, interactive, and visually rich; a stark contrast to rather lengthy text description of topics and themes. Students are now at the centre of their learning and use today’s technology and resources in ways very different from traditional learning materials. They access multiple sources, customize material to suit their needs, mix various media to create new learning, and then share it with unlimited peers through their social networking sites.
