Twin Peaks Middle School
Weekly RAM Newsletter
From the desk of Principal Mills - Sunday, February 5th, 2023
Happy Sunday Ram Families!
I hope this newsletter finds you all well and enjoying our amazing San Diego weather this weekend! Even though Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Thursday, indicating another 6 weeks of winter, and the beginning of the "Snow" Full Moon on Sunday night, it was nice to enjoy some temperatures in the 70s for a few hours this weekend!
We had another packed week of learning and laughter at Twin Peaks, punctuated by a little "leaking" on Friday at the end of lunch! An underground water pipe broke near the front entrance of the TPMS campus, causing a flow of water and debris out into the parking lot. This required us to shut off the water to the school after students and staff had left for the day to isolate the break in the line. Unfortunately, the water cannot be turned back on until after the pipe is repaired. Depending on what work is able to be completed this weekend, this means we will likely not have running water on Monday for some or all of the school day.
In preparation for this eventuality, we have arranged to bring in porta-potties to the softball outfield (at the end of the 900 buildings by the parked buses), along with hand washing stations and bottles of drinking water. Also, the main entrance to school will not be open during the repair work - please use the entrances to school between the 100 and admin buildings and by the MPR/Pride Park. Access to the science patio and classrooms will be through the fire lane entrance only; students will not be able to access the normal entrance to the 700 building and the science patio area during the repair work.
Please remember, this is only a temporary inconvenience, and the PUSD plumbers have assured me this work can be completed in a day once the break in the line is identified and isolated. So that your student is most comfortable at school, please make sure they bring a filled water bottle with them on Monday, and are aware of the new location of our temporary restrooms. Thank you in advance for your patience as we get the needed repairs completed.
This past Wednesday during our all-staff meeting, we had the chance to recognize the amazing efforts of two members of our Ram Staff - English teacher and EL Coordinator Alison Shewmaker, our Teacher of the Year, and Campus Security Specialist Dan Fox, our Classified Employee of the Year. Both are incredibly worthy of this recognition and will represent TPMS and our Ramily well at the district level. Please see their photos and bios below!
GET EXCITED!! It's LCAP Survey Time!! From February 1st through Friday, February 17th, PUSD will be conducting our District wide annual survey to gather your input on our Local Control Accountability Plan, or LCAP, which will help shape the District’s goals and guide our budgeting priorities for the 2023-2024 school year. Parent and student input and feedback is vital in this process!
PUSD is asking the question: “What supports do students need to have their most successful school experience in Poway Unified?” (this may include academic, extracurricular, safety, behavioral, social-emotional, environmental, or related to learning options). Please CLICK HERE to participate in the survey! It should take you 15-20 minutes to complete, depending on how many comments you choose to post and respond to. As we consider our needs here at TPMS, improved and upgraded facilities (classrooms, common spaces, locker rooms, courts and fields) and staffing to support the expansion of elective and support classes are items to consider providing feedback on. THANK YOU in advance for taking the time to complete this survey before February 17th!
Finally this week, February 6-10th is National School Counselor Week, and we have a lot to celebrate here at TPMS! Our amazing Counseling Team - Counselors Melissa Baskin, Jami Jennings, Nicole Roman and Counseling Assistant Donna Myers, are committed to our students' success and work diligently each and every day to support ALL of Rams. On any given day, they work with students with academic needs, social and emotional needs, and many time personal and family needs. If you have a minute this week, please reach our and let our counseling team know how much you appreciate them and all of their hard work!

6th Grade Camp is Coming!
All 6th Graders attending camp will need to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test 72 hours prior to boarding the bus for camp. In order to facilitate this for parents and students, TPMS will be offering a Covid testing opportunity on Sunday, February 12th from 12-2pm on our campus. Families can bring their own over-the-counter test to use, written documentation of a completed test dated after 9am on 2/10, or you can sign up to reserve a free 30 minute test that the school will provide you on campus. To sign-up and/or reserve your Covid test for the February 12th testing session, please CLICK HERE.
ITEMS NEEDED FOR CAMP: Some of our students may not have all of the items they need to attend camp comfortably. Please let our Counseling Team know if you have a sleeping bag, jacket, sweatshirt, gloves, scarf, or hat that you or your kids no longer use and would like to donate. These are the most common items needed, but you can view the complete list below. Thanks so much for supporting 6th Grade Camp!
