Weekly RAM Newsletter

From the desk of Principal Mills - Sunday, February 5th, 2023

Happy Sunday Ram Families!

I hope this newsletter finds you all well and enjoying our amazing San Diego weather this weekend! Even though Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Thursday, indicating another 6 weeks of winter, and the beginning of the "Snow" Full Moon on Sunday night, it was nice to enjoy some temperatures in the 70s for a few hours this weekend!

We had another packed week of learning and laughter at Twin Peaks, punctuated by a little "leaking" on Friday at the end of lunch! An underground water pipe broke near the front entrance of the TPMS campus, causing a flow of water and debris out into the parking lot. This required us to shut off the water to the school after students and staff had left for the day to isolate the break in the line. Unfortunately, the water cannot be turned back on until after the pipe is repaired. Depending on what work is able to be completed this weekend, this means we will likely not have running water on Monday for some or all of the school day.

In preparation for this eventuality, we have arranged to bring in porta-potties to the softball outfield (at the end of the 900 buildings by the parked buses), along with hand washing stations and bottles of drinking water. Also, the main entrance to school will not be open during the repair work - please use the entrances to school between the 100 and admin buildings and by the MPR/Pride Park. Access to the science patio and classrooms will be through the fire lane entrance only; students will not be able to access the normal entrance to the 700 building and the science patio area during the repair work.

Please remember, this is only a temporary inconvenience, and the PUSD plumbers have assured me this work can be completed in a day once the break in the line is identified and isolated. So that your student is most comfortable at school, please make sure they bring a filled water bottle with them on Monday, and are aware of the new location of our temporary restrooms. Thank you in advance for your patience as we get the needed repairs completed.

This past Wednesday during our all-staff meeting, we had the chance to recognize the amazing efforts of two members of our Ram Staff - English teacher and EL Coordinator Alison Shewmaker, our Teacher of the Year, and Campus Security Specialist Dan Fox, our Classified Employee of the Year. Both are incredibly worthy of this recognition and will represent TPMS and our Ramily well at the district level. Please see their photos and bios below!

GET EXCITED!! It's LCAP Survey Time!! From February 1st through Friday, February 17th, PUSD will be conducting our District wide annual survey to gather your input on our Local Control Accountability Plan, or LCAP, which will help shape the District’s goals and guide our budgeting priorities for the 2023-2024 school year. Parent and student input and feedback is vital in this process!

PUSD is asking the question: What supports do students need to have their most successful school experience in Poway Unified? (this may include academic, extracurricular, safety, behavioral, social-emotional, environmental, or related to learning options). Please CLICK HERE to participate in the survey! It should take you 15-20 minutes to complete, depending on how many comments you choose to post and respond to. As we consider our needs here at TPMS, improved and upgraded facilities (classrooms, common spaces, locker rooms, courts and fields) and staffing to support the expansion of elective and support classes are items to consider providing feedback on. THANK YOU in advance for taking the time to complete this survey before February 17th!

Finally this week, February 6-10th is National School Counselor Week, and we have a lot to celebrate here at TPMS! Our amazing Counseling Team - Counselors Melissa Baskin, Jami Jennings, Nicole Roman and Counseling Assistant Donna Myers, are committed to our students' success and work diligently each and every day to support ALL of Rams. On any given day, they work with students with academic needs, social and emotional needs, and many time personal and family needs. If you have a minute this week, please reach our and let our counseling team know how much you appreciate them and all of their hard work!

Alison Shewmaker - TPMS Teacher of the Year, 2023

Alison Shewmaker joined the TPMS staff in 2020 during our pandemic year when we started the school year virtually with students. Prior to Twin Peaks, Alison taught English at Del Norte HS and also in Ridgecrest. In her short time at TPMS, Alison has led transformational change of our EL program and has led the pilot of our AVID Excel elective. Through her hard work and leadership, TPMS has increased the number of parents attending and engaged with our ELPAC, and we have seen record numbers of students reclassifying... 17 this year! Alison builds strong relationships with her students, individualizing their learning when possible to make personal connections. Her classes and lessons are engaging, thoughtful and strategic - every minute of class is accounted for and everything students do has purpose. Students love being in her class, and she has created a sense of family for our EL students where they feel valued and heard. Thank you Alison for all you do for our school community!

Dan Fox - TPMS Classified Employee of the Year, 2023

Dan Fox joined the TPMS Ramily in 2021 as our Campus Security Specialist. Prior to Twin Peaks, Dan served in the same role at both Poway and Abraxas High Schools, and has been a part of Team PUSD since 2014. Dan had an instant impact on our campus; his calm and patient demeanor makes him approachable, and students have come to trust him as a result. His constant focus on students and their safety allows our team to be proactive and work to prevent student incidents before they happen. He is always willing to help out and assist staff and students who need a helping hand, and even comes back to supervise dances and after school events at night and on the weekends. Our campus is incredibly lucky to have "Mr. Dan" - thanks for all you do to keep our campus safe!

PTSA Reflections Art Contest Winners!

This year, students participated in the National PTA Reflections Art Contest. The theme was "Show Your Voice" and TPMS students did an amazing job showing their voice through their art in one or more categories. Entries were judged first at the Twin Peaks PTSA Level, then the top entries advanced to compete with other middle schools at the Palomar Council Level, and, finally the top winners from Palomar Council advanced to compete against middle school entries from across the state at the 9th District Level.

The results for all entries in the Reflections Art Competition are listed below. Congratulations to all of you! We also want to wish the following students the best of luck in the final leg of the competition as they advance to the 9th District: Joanna Kruglick (8th) - Film Production, Payton Atkinson (7th) - Photography, and Natalie Hone (7th) - Music Composition.

Those results will be posted as soon as they are announced. All Reflections Awards will be delivered to your RAM classroom after the final level of judging is complete. If your student is interested in entering next year's competition and wants to get a head start, the theme for 2023-2024 is: "I am Hopeful Because..." For questions, or to find out how you can help on this committee next year, please contact Krista Mertz at kristalynnmertz@gmail.com.

6th Grade Camp is Coming!

Our 6th grade Rams will be attending Cuyamaca Outdoor School, otherwise known as 6th GRADE CAMP, the week of February 13th-17th. Please check the TPMS website for more information by CLICKING HERE!

All 6th Graders attending camp will need to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test 72 hours prior to boarding the bus for camp. Please let our Counseling Team know if you have a sleeping bag, jacket, sweatshirt, gloves, scarf, or hat that you or your kids no longer use and would like to donate. These are the most common items needed, but you can view the complete list below. Thanks so much for supporting 6th Grade Camp!

Free & Reduced Lunch Applications!

Although school meals are now free to all students under California’s new Universal Meals Program, the application for free and reduced-price meals is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students that qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With all students now eating for free, fewer families are completing the application and schools are at risk of losing funds. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy. Plus, students that qualify for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for discounts on transportation, SAT and AP tests, home internet, and college application fees. You can apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.

ASES is Hiring!!

If you are interested or know of someone who is interested in working in our before and after school ASES program, please scan or click the QR code below to apply and become an ASES Program Aide! Shifts are flexible and there's a wide variety of activities and programs to run for students in our before and after school programs. Questions? Please reach out to our ASES Supervisor Jennifer Willette at jewillette@powayusd.com.
