Happy Friday and Happy Fall Break
I hope you have all had a great week and are looking forward a great week of relaxation before the October crazy sets in (yeah, I'm looking at you, Band Directors, Drama and Choral Directors).
Just a few things to note as you work your way out the door today!

Grant Winners
Thank you for submitting great grant applications! We had several for each level and ALL of the applicants were solid so if you didn't get it this time, PLEASE submit again in the spring because they were truly excellent!
Please help me congratulate this semester's grant recipients!
Elementary:
Hutchens Elementary Art with 3D Sculpture Center for K-5 Students
- Description: The funds will be used to purchase 3D sculpture materials and tools for a sculpture center. Tools include: KEVA architecture wooden planks, Madedo Cardboard construction safe-saws, K'NEX Maker kits, PowerCLIX 3D building systems, Straw and Connector sets.
- The goal is to provide students in K-5 with hands-on access to 3D building materials and tools to align with the Teaching for Artistic Behavior program TAB at Hutchens. TAB is a pedagogy based on the premise that all students have the capacity for creative thinking, planning and problem solving, directly aligning with the STEAM initiative and the Design Thinking Process (used at schools like M.I.T. and Stanford University).
Middle:
Moses Middle Chorus with Get Out Your Bag of Tricks
- Description: The funds will be used to provide each chorus member with a "toolkit" in their folder. This toolkit comes from the book Gadgets for Great Singing. Each tool is carefully chosen and used to help young singers learn specific concepts. For example, a small paintbrush can be used to imagine painting the contour of a phrase in the air, or a piece of sponge can be used to allow singers to "feel" word stress by squeezing on the stressed words.
High:
SPHS Art with Literacy and Technology in the Art Classroom
- Description: Funds will provide tablets for classroom use. Students in art at the high school level are responsible for using Canvas to post pictures of their finished art projects. Students would also be able to search for reference images and access literacy based websites, such as Newsela, to complete supplemental assignments. Other supplemental assignments include researching artists, their work, career opportunities, etc. Many of the students do not have access to technology of their own so class sets are very helpful.
Reminders for Immediately Following the Break
As you go on your way, please keep in mind the following:
- Broadway Takes Paulding - There are 31 slots still open. Get your drama and choral kids (8th-12th grade only) signed up ASAP as we will NOT allow more than 100 students total. Letter that went home at the bottom of this newsletter. Reshare with students.
- Technology Note - Beginning October 1 you will NOT be able to send an email for technology help. You will use HELPDESK; Your Helpdesk Login IS your full email address and your password is "helpdesk" until now - you will need to reset your password every two weeks as new hires are uploaded. This is also accessible through the intranet.
- City Springs Theatre - CLICK HERE for the New City Springs Theatre's upcoming offerings for student programs. Three Words: Elf, The Musical
- The State of the Arts - our Quarterly Publication WILL NOT be public today because I am a slacker and ran out of time. Look for that on Monday or Tuesday after the break.
