Principal's Message
TWO VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCMENTS:
Kindergarten Registration has started!!! Please see the flyer below. Although you can register on any date, February 6th is our designated LC day. PLEASE... I cannot stress this enough... if you have a kindergartener or know a kindergartener, please register sooner rather than later. We rely on completed registrations for our staffing. Knowing our numbers early is so helpful!!!
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey for Parents is now open through March 31.
This annual survey is an important tool for us, providing a glimpse into YOUR current perception of our school. Prior research has shown that schools strong on three or more of the 5Essentials were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains than schools weak on three or more of the Essentials.
Wondering what the Essentials are?
~Effective Leaders
~Collaborative Teachers
~Involved Families
~Supportive Environments
~Ambitious Instruction
Please take the time to complete the parent survey today! Principals and superintendents will receive their 5Essentials Reports in May 2023. If you have any questions about 5Essentials you can contact me or learn more about the survey platform online here.
Here is the link to take the survey:
http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent
We also are "scored" on what percentage of our parents participate. Please have all adults in the household complete a survey. We only get scores back if we have responses from over 20% of our school community.

Does your child always seem to run out of time?
Time Management begins with students observing and recording how they spend their time outside of school. Students categorize and prioritize activities, as well as reflect on barriers and solutions, to keep high-priority items "front and center" when planning out their week.
At Home: Have your child log their time every day for a week. Then, help your child categorize the list. For example: biking, football practice, and skateboarding might all fall under one category of "Exercise," while reading, typing, and computer research could all be under the category of "Schoolwork." Total up the minutes. Once categorized, have your child prioritize the most important activities. Be sure to discuss why some take priority over others. Will this help with a future goal? Will it have a positive or negative effect on goals, themselves, or others? It can be eye-opening when a child realizes s/he spends more time getting ready in the morning than they do on schoolwork. Or, do they spend more time playing video games than being active? How can we help our children have a healthy balance?
Kindergarten Registration
If you will have an incoming Kindergarten student this fall at Lakewood Creek (must be 5 by September 1, 2023), registration for them is Monday, February 6 at the District Office across from OHS (walk in anytime 9:30-12:30 or 3:30-7:00 pm). Be sure to register them on that date or as soon as possible after so our school has a good idea for enrollment and number of Kindergarten classes that will be needed well in advance of the school year.
Details and what you need to bring for paperwork and forms are at the link below. You won't have to pay any fees at registration. The will be sent to you later via PushCoin before school starts. Please share with other parents you may know who have incoming Kindergarten students.
Note that if you currently have a Brokaw (or satellite site) student, you don't have to go through this process; they are already registered in the district.
Registration takes place at Central Registration located at 4175 Route 71 (Door #2).

Schoolwide Second Step Focus
Second Step is the resource we use to teach social emotional skills in all our classes. Our third unit's theme is "Empathy and Kindness." Emotion Management teaches students how to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
Next week, your child should learn how to:
Kindergarten: give at least one example of a kind act they could do at school.
1st Grade: demonstrate at least one kind act they could do for people in a variety of contexts.
2nd Grade: use empathy to identify a kind act they could do for a person in their school community.
3rd Grade: ask question to determine how someone feels and a kind act they might want.
4th Grade: explain how understanding someone's point of view could change their own thinking or actions in a given scenario.
5th Grade: evaluate possible solutions to a community problem by considering different points of view.

Snow/Emergency Day Reminder
Parents/Guardians,
Snow/Emergency Day work packets have been sent home and are available in your child's Google Classroom. In the event the school would need to close for snow/emergencies, the school day will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Teachers will be available by phone, email, and live in their Google Meets from: 9-9:30am, 11:30am-12pm and 1:30-2pm to support and answer any questions a child might have.
Student attendance is required for a snow/emergency day. The second page of each packet will be collected by the classroom teacher when school reopens. The students only need to bring THAT page back filled out by the parent. They do not need to bring the whole packet back to school. Please keep it in a safe place at home. We will be using this as our instructional tool for our snow/emergency days.
Please know that all elementary schools are following this same procedure. If you have any questions please email your classroom teacher for clarification.
Thank you.
