WBMS Friday Notes
January 10, 2020
Reflections from Ms. Williams
Happy New Year, WBMS Parents and Guardians –
Welcome back! Reconnecting with students, watching as they hugged and high fived classmates they missed over the break, and meeting our new Jaguars were this week’s highlights.
Right before Winter Break I received MORE good news about our school. WBMS has been designated as a “BEATING The ODDS” school, which is a really big deal! Beating the Odds uses a statistical analysis to compare a school’s actual performance on the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) with the performance of schools across the state with similar characteristics (and it is really hard for a school like WBMS to get this type of distinction). Schools performing higher than statistical projections are labeled as “Beating the Odds”. Bottom line, we exceeded expectations, and I am super proud of our students, teachers, parents, and community.
With learning, teaching, and our extracurricular activities back in full swing, it’s hard to believe we just started second semester on Monday. We are focused on another fabulous semester at WBMS!
Please take a few minutes to complete the parent climate survey http://gshs.gadoe.org/parents. The information from this survey helps determine our Climate Rating.
Have a wonderful weekend and stay warm!

Flu Season Is in Full Swing…
Student Health Services
Widespread Flu in Georgia
January 2020
Unfortunately, Georgia is experiencing widespread flu. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), the predominant flu virus currently circulating is a B/Victoria strain that doesn't usually occur until the end of the flu season, in early spring. Although flu B viruses can infect anyone, they generally strike children and young adults more than the elderly. Vaccination is the best prevention against the flu for all ages, and the B/Victoria strain is included in this season’s vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), DPH and other health officials are encouraging everyone to protect yourself and prevent the spread of flu. They are stressing, if you have not gotten a flu vaccine yet, do no wait any longer. It is not too late!
“Every individual over the age of six months should get a flu vaccine – not just for their own protection, but to protect others around them who may be more vulnerable to the flu and its complications,” says Kathleen E. Toomey, M.D., M.P.H., DPH commissioner. “It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body, so now is the time to get a flu shot.”

Pay Attention to Attendance: Keep Your Child On Track in Middle School
DID YOU KNOW?
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
- Missing 10 percent, or about 18 days, of the school year can drastically affect a student’s academic success.
- Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks.
- Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from college and keep a job.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Make school attendance a priority
• Talk about the importance of showing up to school everyday, make that the expectation.
• Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
• Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day.
• Don’t let your child stay home unless truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomach aches may be signs of anxiety.
Help your student stay engaged
• Know Fulton County School attendance policy.
• Check on your child’s attendance to be sure absences are not piling up.
• Stay on top of academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
• Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
• Encourage meaningful after school activities, including sports and clubs.
• Talk to teachers or counselor if you notice sudden changes in behavior. These could be tied to something going on at school.
• Ask for help from the school social worker if you’re having trouble getting your child to school.

FBLA
FBLA held its January general meeting this Friday in the Media Center. Our special guest, Ms. Renee Mullen, shared aspects of her business “Renee’s Face Painting” and the importance of communication and networking both in and out of the school classroom. Students were extremely focused as Ms. Mullen shared the value of developing soft skills including self-motivation, decisiveness, responsibility and teamwork. Members of the chapter discussed their upcoming RLC awards assembly at Alpharetta High School on January 16th and the State Leadership Conference competitive events that will be offered to the members in early February. We will celebrate FBLA week from February 3-7 with daily activities to support awareness of our successful middle-level chapter. We concluded our meeting with a fast-paced Quizlet Live session on business slogans. Monday will be the final day to join our chapter this year as we conclude our open-enrollment period ($20 dues plus $5 t-shirt while supplies last). Information will be emailed this week to all chapter members and their parents regarding the link to enroll in the upcoming competitive events for the SLC.
