Principal's Message:
Dear Weibel Families,
Our students recently finished the Great Kindness (virtual) Challenge last month. I hope many students were able to show kindness in many varieties of ways. February is a jam packed month with many activities and celebrations: Black History month, Groundhog Day, 100th day of school, Lunar New Years, Valentines Day, and our own Weibel Service Project. Thank you to all our teachers and room parents/volunteers in efforts to keep all our activities running during these times.
I know many of you have questions about returning back to school. The best place for you to be up to date on this topic is our District Website. https://superintendent-fusd-ca.schoolloop.com/
If we have any new information, we will keep you informed. Hope all of you are doing well, and take care.
Thank you,
Ms. Lee
Virtual Food Drive still going on:
The Virtual Food Drive through Alameda County Community Food Bank ends February 19. There's still time to participate. We would like to encourage families to participate in this as a service project for our students. You could make this into a fun project for your house by having the kids earn their donation money through doing some service for you, such as a house chore. It could be a great way to practice counting money and learning the value of earning money. We hope to reach our school goal of $2400! Please check out our virtual food drive page: https://www.vfd-accfb.org/grouphome.aspx?ID=7812

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope that you have been having a wonderful start to 2021!
Since returning from break, many parents have been sharing that their children are checked out and struggling with staying focused in class. There are many things you can do to help support your child through this.
* One tip is to ensure that your child has a good night's sleep. Check out the Sleep Habits Mental Health and Wellness Challenge for some great ideas. Taking breaks away from the computer (and other screens) can also help. This includes phones, gaming, tv, etc. Here are some ideas for non-screen activities that kids (and adults) can do.
* Another is doing mindfulness. I know that I have mentioned it before, and for good reason! It is great for the body and the brain. Mindfulness could be doing something you already do, but mindfully (aka while paying attention to what you are doing). One example is noticing the changing texture, taste, smell, feel, etc of your food before and as you eat it. It could also just be an opportunity to pause and notice your breathing or maybe the sounds around you. Pick one thing to focus on and do that for just a minute or more if you like. Ask your child what they noticed. Do it with them and share what you noticed.
* The last two quick tips for helping your child with focus and getting back into school are exercise (any and all kinds...the more the better) and finally, making a goal or setting an intention with your classwork. What does your child want to make sure that they do well today? How will they do that? Why is that important to them? What might make this hard to do? What can they tell themselves to get through? What might get in the way that they can plan ahead to deal with (like moving toys out of the way, closing extra screens that are open on a device used for school)? Make the conversation more of a listening experience and a time to be curious for the parent/guardian. You may even ask them how they are feeling about school at this point. No need to fix anything for them, just listen. Trust that they can come up with solutions. If they ask for help figuring it out, then help. But, encourage them to come up with their own solutions first. I hope that you find these tips helpful. If you need more specifics or if there are other things that you are struggling with or want to learn more about in terms of mental health and wellness, don't hesitate to reach out to me at candersen1@fusdk12.net . Please also be sure to check out the Mental Health and Wellness Challenge for the latest challenge for your child to learn more about taking care of their brain and body so that they can be their best self. Our current challenge is for exercise.
Sincerely,
Christel Andersen
