We have the Right Mental Attitude
News from the 5th Grade
Students have been multiplying, dividing, and using the order of operations to solve problems. They know two ways to use partial products multiplication: area model (box method) and the vertical(stacking) way. Students know how to use partial quotient division using the three "easy breezy" facts. Students are trying to remember to "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" when solving problems with more than one operation. Ask your child to see their Math Journal. These have been updated to show these things we have been learning and can be used as study tools.
ELA
Fifth Graders are currently reading the novel Liar & Spy by Rebecca Stead. We are learning to dig deeper into the text to get to know the characters and provide text evidence for our answers. We will be starting to look at Figurative Language and how authors use it to enhance their stories. We will be adding definitions and reminders to our Reading Notebooks, and we will be practicing using and finding figurative language in a variety of ways. Don't forget to ask your child about his/her new reading goal for the third quarter and keep reading and enjoying books together as a family.
Science/Social Studies
5th-grade social studies are currently covering the Inca Civilization. Students are learning about how they farmed in the Andes Mountains, how their leaders were appointed and what crops they grew. In science, students are just finished up force and motion, where they learned about the pull of gravity and how force is needed to move objects. They are currently learning about Earth's rotation and orbit, how much water covers Earth, and how we have life here. Next, we will move onto the moon, the remaining planets in our solar system, and stars.
Band
5th grade did a wonderful job at their first band concert. They were so excited to play for their parents. We are looking forward to their second concert on Sunday, May 7 at 2:00 PM.

Mohican Outdoor School
Even though the temperatures were COLD, 5th graders came prepared to be outside. Students had a blast. The Mohican Outdoor School staff did their part as well by having shorter trips outside and more hot chocolate breaks scheduled. There was enough snow to go tubing several times. It's never too cold for that!
Everyone had a community job to do daily. Some set tables for meal, some swept floors or took out the trash. The animals were cared for by others. Everyone took turns bringing food to the table at meal time and cleaning up after meals. All took part in keeping their dorms clean, too. Students learned how smoothly things can run when we all work together.
Everyone had the opportunity to hike up to Hemlock Falls and enjoy the wonders of the outdoors. Hopefully, this will be a field trip to always remember.
