The Reading Room
Building Bridges through Comprehension, Inferring
Continuing our Exploration of Inferring
Remember that schema + evidence = inferring. Students need to put all of our comprehension strategies to work at this point. They use their metacognition (thinking), their schema and their inferring skills in order to be able to fully understand the text they are reading. Students need practice every day with comprehension strategies. They need consistent reminders to be thinking and questioning, while they are reading.
Ask your child what is in the garbage bag.
Inferring Chart
Remember to use these sentence stems while reading with your child. They will help to develop inferring skills.
Mystery Books
Third grade students are reading mystery books in The Reading Room.. These types of books are perfect for practicing inferring skills because students must collect evidence throughout the text to try and solve the mystery.
The PTA Book Fair is HERE!!!
From October 12-15 your child can explore and purchase high quality literature right here at ASD. Your child's class will be visiting the book fair together but children are welcome to browse and shop during recess as well. Come before school with your child and enjoy looking at books with each other.

Also, if you would prefer to listen to books together, try the two options listed below. Audible is linked to Amazon so if you have an account, you can use your current Amazon ID and password. Itunes also has audio books that you can download into your itunes account. Listening to books together is a great way to bond, expand your child's attention span and increase vocabulary.
