Highlights of the 2013-2014



  • Presenting databases and Sacramento Public Library's Homework Support information to EHMS parents during September's Parent University.
  • Banned Book Week Contest in September.
  • Working with Elsie Mak from SPL to provide free access to SPL databases and register students for Paws to Read, the SPL Summer Reading Program.
  • Using Web 2.0 tools such as Animoto and Glogster with classes to add a technology aspect to student projects. (Check out our Research wiki athttp://researchtrail.wikispaces.com to view student work samples!)
  • Presenting Digital Learning to our staff during monthly staff meetings.
  • Coordinating our Digital Citizenship Day on Thursday, April 24, 2013.
  • Hosting the MTHS Art Show in the library.
  • Spring Scholastic Book Fair run by our volunteer Book Crew. Our successful fair allowed the library to purchase magazine subscriptions, on-line encyclopedia subscription and WebPath Express for 2014-2015 and more library books.



Our library is a center of learning and activity. This year we have enjoyed collaborations with community and staff to provide new services and events in the library. We continue to learn how to provide library services with a reduced staff. Special events that encourage and promote independent reading have suffered but our library usage is up. Two big library events continue to fall during textbook distribution and collection which made it difficult to celebrate Teen Read Week and Teen Tech Week when the library is closed. We continue to close on Thursdays to keep up with the paperwork aspect of our jobs and to do the work our library technicians used to do. The library staff appreciates the understanding and support of our administration, staff and students for allowing us this time. We are excited to learn that the library technician positions will be returning.

Collaboration for Student Research

Eighth-grade Language Arts classes (Daniella Hill, Jennifer Jenkins, Tami Nelson and Paul Babby) conducted research on Careers during first and second terms, then returned to research the Holocaust and create glogs (interactive posters) on Glogster. Jeff Dresser’s Career Adventuring classes visited often to conduct research on careers and to use the computers to access California Career Zone. AVID teachers, Meridith Grosso and Tracy Christopher Schilling visited the library to provide their students with a more in-depth Library orientation in the form of a scavenger hunt. Luis Corpuz’s 7th-grade Science classes visited the library for two research projects on Extinct Species and Viruses. Physical Education classes taught by Frances Mosley visited the library to research My Plate and healthy food choices.

Book Talks and Library Visits

English Language Arts classes that participated in regular library visits and book talks included: David Baraza, Bridgette Bell, Eunice Cerezo and Thamesia McNeil. Dan Seymour's Independent Living Skills class visited every other week. Ms. Wade's classes also visited to select library books for independent reading.

Circulation Statistics

September and October are our strongest circulation months with 2,924 books circulated in September and 2,468 books in October. The rest of the year saw steady circulation. In Nonfiction, the 700s (Arts and Recreation) are the top circulating range. This range includes manga, comic books and sports which are quite popular with our students. Nine thousand five hundred forty-six fiction books were circulated. We supported classroom teachers by circulating 768 DVDs and videos. See chart below regarding the breakdown of the circulation of our collection.

Database Usage Statistics

EBSCOHost usage saw 108,490 searches. See graph for breakdown of monthly use. Grolier Online saw a total of 17, 293 searches with 3,750 conducted remotely outside the school walls and 13,543 conducted on campus.

Library Services

Our library opened at 7:30 a.m. this allowed the high school students 30 minutes of time before school and the middle school students 45 minutes of library time. With a dismissal time of 2:45 p.m., EHMS students had an additional 45 minutes of time after school. Our library continued to be closed on Thursdays to provide time for the librarians to keep up with the administrative side of library management and to plan collaborative research lessons for visiting classes.


I continued to present Digital Learning segments at our staff meetings which introduce our teachers to free technology they could use with their students, for presentation, for information and for organization. I continued to work with James Ponder, our School Loop webmaster, to keep our library webpage up-to-date. The high school provided EBSCO databases for all of our library patrons and their families to use. We added more e-books to our collection but they are still accessed through a guest account. Our databases and e-books provide our students with access to information outside our library walls. I provided Glogster education accounts for 8th-grade Language Arts students so they could continue to create electronic posters. Free Animoto education accounts were provided as well. Our liaison with the Sacramento Public Library continues to flourish. Elsie Mak of the Elk Grove SPL branch provided us with e-cards to have access SPL databases and homework help. She even delivered library cards to students who had signed up on our campus!


We continued to notify parents and guardians of overdue materials with mailings sent in February and April. Other ways we notified students were through School Loop mail and news, report card holds and the Library No Activities List.

Staffing

Our library staffs one full-time teacher librarian for the middle school. The library was opened Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. During textbook distribution and collection the library was closed which totaled 25 days to meet the needs of our block schedule. The library was opened before and after school during textbook return for students to use computers and check out library books. On Final Days, the textbook windows remained open for one half hour after dismissal for students to return books.

Library Special Events

Parent University

Mrs. Klein and I presented a brief orientation for the EHMS parents on our databases and other library services on September 4th. We promoted SPL resources and encouraged parents to sign their children up for SPL library cards.

Banned Book Week

The library celebrated the freedom to read during Banned Book Week during the week of September 23rd to September 27th with displays and contests. Students entered daily drawings by answering questions about banned and challenged books.

Poetry Month

This year we had a Poet Tree in the library. Student hung their own poetic compositions or copies of their favorite poems on the branches. The librarians further decorated the tree with pictures of poets and our tree topper... Mr. Edgar Allan Poe, of course.

Spring Book Fair

Our Spring book Fair was held during May 5th through 9th with our evening event during the EHMS Open House on Wednesday evening of May 7th. The fair was run by our volunteer student Book Crew. This year we had 80 students apply to be a part of the Book Crew for forty spots. After new applicants were paper screened, they participated in interviews conducted by returning Book Crew members. The Book Crew worked hard to produce our best Scholastic Book Fair ever! Our Book Fiesta was a success! We earned enough money to purchase Web Path Express, Grolier Online Encyclopedia, magazine subscriptions and more favorite books. Thank you, Book Crew!

Professional Accomplishments

  • Served on Library Leadership
  • Presented with Karin Ledford to BTSA teachers.
  • Started a dialog with District Administration and Technology Services about opening our Destiny catalog outside our campus walls for students to have more access to our library books beyond our library walls.
  • Attended a Follett Software Institute in Concord to learn more about the coming upgrades for our Destiny Circulation system.
  • Served as the Digital Citizenship Coordinator for our campus

Goals for the 2014-2015 School Year

  • Set up e-book accounts for individual check out
  • Offer more events that promote reading and the library
  • Educate staff about 21st Century Learning Skills and Web 2.0 Tools
  • Find a replacement digital tool for Glogster
  • Collaborate with others about how teacher librarians can support the implementation of Common Core State Standards
  • Continue to work toward the goal of access of our Destiny catalog beyond the walls of the school for the district
